HI Everyone,
I am new to wifi and I am going to start a business in Arizona offering Wifi Connectivity in Arizona. I am trying to find out which AP I can purchase that offers the most bandwidth and have the Most simultaneous users on at at time with out getting bogged down. Anyone know what AP I should use. From what I have seen 20 concurrent users to Proxim Orinco 4000 the tech said about 60 users at a time. Any advice would be great. Arizona offers a great line of site to possible customers because its all flat and all desert and DSL and Cable are expensive so I think there is a market for me out there. I am looking into this antenna ( 2.4 GHz Horizontally Polarized Sectorized Omnidirectional Array ) and attaching one AP and 1 (1) watt amplifier to each panel. Thanks to anyone who can point me to some quality AP's to consider and any advice that will help me out. Thanks. Dave Last edited by DaveMalton : 11-16-2007 at 11:43 AM. |

You're going to have to do a lot more homework then worry about the AP. Your system isn't going to be just one AP. It'll be several, with repeaters. Every AP will be different and some have QOS to handle the traffic. You first need to know the bandwidth of the supplying connection. It doesn't matter how many users it can handle. 1 user can bring a single AP to its knees.
This system, done properly will start out in thousands of dollars and go up from there. You'll also want to study Antenna theory and pay attention to EIRP and lest the FCC knock on your door and fine you. If you do you homework and ask the questions intelligently you'll get the help you need. We have several users that do this for a living but you have to do you homework first. Asking the question in the manner you did doesn't show much promise.

FWIW, I have 2 CISCO 1200 series AP's at my office for the developers only, the stats are showing 40MB's steady on each one daily and that's with about 100 guys on each one.

Buy the book, Deploying License-Free Wireless Wide Area Networks by Jack Unger. Read it cover to cover. Rinse, repeat. That work will get you to the point where you can start to ask the right questions.

So, as a hobby, do you poke sticks at uncaged lions, just to see if they will react?

Thorn,
Thanks for the book information, will order it off Amazon today. I have all ready started building my box of Junk. I have a 1 watt shireeninc amplifier and I just bought a Engenius 3220 26dbm Wireless Bridge/AP/ WDS New in Box off of Ebay for 76.00 Guess I did not get hurt there, and I have a few diffrent antennas. There used to be a company here in Orange County that I was a beta tester for there wifi service back when you could only get 802.11B they put a amp and antenna on the roof of my house and aimed it a 40 story building about 9 miles away. This was about 8 years ago when DSL was not availibe at my house yet. They folded so I got to keep the antenna, box, amp cisco bridge and a free computer. I dont know why they folded if equipment was too much money for them but while it lasted it worked great. I am just hoping I can kind of duplicate the same thing in a cost effective manner and make some money doing it. Thanks for the book info and thanks to everyone else who has posted or will post here. Dave Arizona-wifi.Com Hopfully coming to Arizona someday soon. |

There are a lot of factors that can make the economics of being a small ISP very difficult.
