Approaching Homeowners??
Greetings.......
What have you found to be the best way to approach homeowners to advise them of the potential risks involved having an open AP?? Has anyone generated a simplified educational cover letter? Has anyone acquired a supporting letter from the local authorities? Is anyone making money at this?? Thank You in Advance. Stephen |

You can find further info here. It's only one example, but it pretty much shows how venures like the one you're contemplating go. Please search for yourself, next time. If I seem a little curt, it's because it's 6:30 am, and I haven't had any coffee yet. All apologies in advance.

I don't think you should go to ANY homeowner and tell them there are problems with their computer system. They'd be like "How do you know anything about MY computer system in MY house?!?!?!" , and if they had any important records on their system it'd be much worse.
Now they'd already be hyper, so they couldn't or wouldn't listen to how you were cruising around with a laptop and special antenna and saw their network from the road. The only thing you could possibly do is advertise in the newspaper or on community bulletin boards that you can do security tests along with whatever else. LET THE HOMEOWNER COME TO YOU and ask questions. Then it'd be okay (maybe) to show them your test equipment and how you do it. It's a really sensitive subject, and I would want no part of it if it were me. Maybe you could offer to teach a class at a local community college on computer security and go from there. But above all else, LET THEM COME TO YOU!!! Don't try to push things and show them how unsafe their network is if they don't want to know or can't understand it.
