Basic NS: How do you people get humongous maps?

Do you keep adding points from individual drives to the map, or do you reload an existing .ns1 file and continue driving from that? Seems that #1 is more logical, but I'm new to actually mapping this stuff and want to be certain.

Some do both. It's better to make a new file with each drive. If netstumbler crashes the file could be damaged, then you'd have to start all over.

That's what I figured; thanks.
I lost a short drive today due to the PC freezing. I think it was related to the script that reads APs aloud; I shut it off and had no trouble after that.

I drive around making a new file. I'll save that somewhere, but, also merge it with my master file. I'll make maps of both.

I do a similar thing. Every file I've made on a given WarDrive is saved separately. Each one is also merged into a master .NS1 file. Maps are generated from both the master file, as well as individual files. I don't make a seperate map of every drive, but do have the capability. The individual files are especially interesting when compared to older maps of the same area. You can see the growth of WiFi in a given area very easily, sometimes even on a weekly basis.

Thorn, this brings up an excellent idea. I know folks already generate statistics on growth, but it would be nice to be able to compare the .NS1 data and generate maps that show growth data. Numbers are fine, but the maps would show us WHERE the growth is taking place. This could be useful.

Right now I'd expect to see huge growth in residential areas right after Christmas. Over time you'd expect to see more businesses, or business districts, showing growth.

Now, we just need the scripts to do the work. Anyone up for the task? My plate is kind of full right now.

I did my parents local area for WWWD IV back in the summer. I also did an hours drive there when I was down for christmas. The growth, in such a short time, was huge. This included both residential and buisness areas.

When i first rgistered here (look to the left), I'd be lucky to get ten access points in an hour. Now I can eaily get 150+ It's still small numbers for some, I know (and dont need you telling me...), but, that's not the point. If we're interested in growth, then the results are impressive.

Perl/MySQL

I just might have to play with this idea. This perl/mysql script should give me a good start.

If/when I have the time I'll let you know how this goes.

Ah yes. What's the topic? Wifi Security I suppose. Can't wait to check it out. I'm still hoping to attend, but work may interfere (it has a way of screwing up my life )

Any chance you'll be posting here for a peer review?

The topic is actually a warspying/viewing application that will work in a fashion similar to NS. It will grab the video frame off the air, save the image to disk and log the Lat/Lon. At least that's the plan. It's run into a few snags, but if I'm lucky, v.0.1 will be ready for public release at the 'con.

Here's a taste from one recent draft: 'Since 09/11/01 there has been a sharp increase in the number and use of video surveillance equipment in many places within the US, both public and private. In that regard, we're quickly approaching Britain (which leads the world in per-capita surveillance cameras.) Many of these are wireless, due to the ease of installation and setup. Not to mention, X10 has spammed everyone in the world who has Internet access with as least one advertisement about their wireless cameras.

I'll leave the debate as to whether many of these surveillance cameras are actually useful or are merely "security theater" (as Bruce Schneier so eloquently puts it), to other people. The fact is that they are out there, and the signals can be plucked off the air very simply. That means both the intended viewer and anyone else who desires to see the broadcasts can do so.'

As far as posting it here, what I'm planning on doing is announcing it here in the Off Topic forum after shmoocon. The EXE will be available for download on my site, probably as beggarware. The source code will probably be there too, if there's any interest in it and just to prove I'm not doing anything malicious to people's machines.

Full details as far as hardware requirments and a minimal "howto" will also be posted.

On the subject of the UK having more cameras then anyone else (BTW, the use of CCTV is yet to have any independant assesment as to it's qualities in crime prevention), this was in the news this morning:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01..._peeping_toms/

Made me laugh...

-edit- Even more this morning on wireless cameras:

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...47212&from=rss

It's not the same, I know, but...

I can see a big slashdotting coming for this program. Rightly so; I'm pretty excitied about it.

This is an alert from the TJNS (Thread Jack Notification System). This is NOT a test. This thread is now officially jacked.

Cripes, they work for the Council's monitoring center! What the hell were they thinking?

It's been repeated enough, but I still have to verify that it is actually true that the UK has more cameras. I just need to google for some stats or a published study to reference to, and hold that statement up. Once more thing...
