Can WEP be cracked with a Broadcom chipset card?

Hi...

I'm a big-time n00b when it comes to Wi-Fi and I recently found out that cracking a WEP key is pretty easy. I had been using a WEP key on my Linksys WRT54G router until a few months ago when I switched to WPA and set the MAC address access restriction thing. I searched the net and sure thing, pages and pages of info on cracking WEP, but most of the stuff was kind of complicated (sorry if I'm not a big-time geek, this stuff isn't easy for me). So I downloaded a couple of programs (aircrack, Airsnort), to find out if I could do it, and even after reading a couple of guides on the net, I still couldn't crack my own WEP key. Then I found out that neither of those two programs support Broadcom chipsets (I have a Linksys WPC54G PC card, and nothing else).

So my question is, how can I crack my own WEP key on the WRT54G using my WPC54G on Windows XP? Is it even possible? I don't have Linux either and for the time being, I don't want to get into it yet (well, at least until Longhorn comes out full of DRM!). Having said that, I will probably try to get Linux on my system before the end of this year. Is Suse Linux Professional 9.3 a good choice? I've heard it's good but there are so many different distributions of Linux, it's very confusing...

Alright that's it, I'd appreciate any comments or help - thanx!

Plain and simple, Broadcom chipsets suck donkey balls. The WPC54G is a fine card for just connecting to the network but nothing else.

So I guess cracking WEP is not quite as easy as you first thought?

And it's "thanks"!

Chill out man, I forgot about this and this afternoon I had some free time, came back to see my thread again.

Thanks for the response, streaker69.

I guess that I'll look for a capable card whenever I need a new one.

Since Streaker was nice, take a read all the documentation on AirSnort and Aircrack they work best with a specific chipset and not much else.

As for Suse Professional I ask you if it's your first time why go with a distro that's ment to be used in a commercial setting? For a Linux newbie I would start out by downloading and trying a "LiveCD" or two or three. That way you don't have to actually install it to use it. There's the Auditor LiveCD packed full of security tools that you might find of interest. IMHO the most user friendly Linux dsitribution for a first timer is the Ubuntu distribution. It's Debian Linux based and I think you'll find it easier to work with.

And most important of all be ready to read and search and read and read some more. It's the only way.
