Cartenna?
hi
now i dont pretend to know all the ins and outs of wi-fi, and all the math that goes with it, but would it not be possible to make your car the atenna for wardrving? I mean, is there no way to use the metal of the cars body/chassis as the antenna? Is would make your "profile" much smaller Is this feasible? |

No. There's no practical way.

You could try hot-glueing a twisted coat hanger onto the top of a tinfoil hat.

No, at least not effective for 2400Mhz. I'm sure someone can go long into Antenna theory and radiation patterns, etc. but simply:
Wavelength (in feet) = 984 / frequency (in megahertz) .41(feet)=984/2400 or 4.92 so ideally the antenna only needs to be 4.92 inches in length. A few reasons I can see not using a car body is the metal is not continous there are insulating breaks between panels, frame, etc. The body of the car is used at power ground for the entire vehicle. The impedence of the car is not matched to the receiving equipment. Quote:

joema, You're next logical question is probably going to be whether you can integrate it into the AM/FM antenna. Again, the practical answer is no. It can be done, but is costly and ineffecient. Considering that WiFi mobile antennae are usually in the $50-$75 range for a good one, and the largest mobile antennae usually is about 3" in length, you are better off spending your money there. The "profile" is not very much at all.
