Cisco Antenna

Excuse me if I'm such a n00b...

but I just bought a Cisco Aironet AIR-ANT24120 for long-range 360 degree coverage.

Yet... when I mount it on my roof, plug it into my Linksys using RPTNC connectors...

The signal is VERY weak as I'm using a certified Cisco cables, been very careful about setting it all up, etc...

Whenever I walk around 500 feet from my house, the signal then dies.

Help, please.

If you only bought one of these antennas, did you tell the AP to only use that one Antenna instead of having it set to Diversity by default? Only one antenna attached, configure the AP to use the Right or Left Antenna based upon which side you connected it to.

Hmmm.

Now, that I didn't think of. :|

If I had it set on diversity, then the cisco antenna loses power, correct?

The AP would be trying to listen and transmit on two antennas based upon where the signal from the client is coming from. Setting it to the single antenna it will only try to listen and transmit on the one.

It can't hurt to give it a try, even if this doesn't solve the problem, it's the proper way to have the AP configured for what you're doing.

Give it a try and stop back if it doesn't resolve and we'll try something else.

No luck. Disabled diversity and then set the wireless on one RPTNC port.

Same results.

Sounds like a mystery inside of an enigma wrapped in a burrito.

Well... Whenever I moved my wireless card close to the coaxial cable, the signal gets really strong. Is it a possibly that the cable is the possible catalyst to a problem?

Sure that's a possibility. What kind of cable is it? How long is your run?

Did your pet hampster chew through part of the cable where you can't see it?

Hopefully the accesspoint is on the roof as well. If not you should be using lmr-400 or better cable.
