Unhappy D-Link 650+, NetStumbler, 256-bit encr.

Newbie here,

I installed NetStumbler 0.4 on my Dell laptop with XP and a D-Link 650+ card. My driver is provided by D-Link, version 4.15.5.1, dated 9/8/2003.

NetStumbler seems to be working as far as I can tell. It finds my D-Link 614+ using the SSID and other settings from the configuration, but it has had a negative effect on my ability to connect to it. I now have to use 128-bit encryption, 256-bit will not work. Can anyone explain this behavior?

Before I get referred to FAQ's, README's, HTML help, etc, please know that I did look at these, but found nothing that led me to believe 256-bit encryption would not work. I did understand that the D-Link 650+ is not officially supported, but that when running XP with an NDIS 5.1 driver it should work. If there are any specific postings related to this issue, please refer me to these, as I somehow couldn't locate them.

I also found nothing that helped me fix the issue. I uninstalled NetStumbler and reinstalled my D-Link drivers twice, restored an earlier system configuration using system restore, and searched for PCANDIS3.VXD (which I didn't find). Nothing has helped.

I can live with 128-bit encryption at home, but other APs that I need to connect to (which I have no control over) are 256 bit.

Thanks for any help.

Despite saying you didn't want to be refered to the readme, maybe, you should have a look at it. If you did, you'd see that you can't connect to a network andrun NS at the same time. This feature is by design.

Ch, Check it out.

NS and connect simultaneously

Thanks for the quick reply!

I did not notice that in the readme, however it doesn't exactly apply to this situation. I uninstalled NS and still could not connect to my AP with 256 bit encryption. I'm worried that something was left behind (or altered), but I can't figure out what.

Works again

I set encryption back to 256 bit and was able to connect again. I'm not really sure what went wrong, or why it's fixed now, but I am happy to get 256 bit connectivity back!
