Post Different Network Types.

I am getting a new laptop, and I was wondering if it comes with an 802.11b card, will it be able to detect 802.11g networks as well? Also will I be able to connect to the 802.11g networks with the "b" card? If this is true the "g" network would be simply reduced to the "b" cards speed right? By the way i'm kinda new to this.. Any help would be great, thanks..

Yes as 'G' is backwards compatible. So with a 'B' card you would be able to find 'G' and yes it would mean you'd be running on 11MBPS.

Yes b will detect g. Not if the g network is running in "g only" mode. Otherwise yes you would connect at the b rate.

The network doesn't really "reduce speed." You will connect at 11 mbps, however, if other clients using 802.11g connect, it will not slow their connection down to 11 mbps. It will be slower because more clients are connected, but the network speed won't reduce.

Sorry guys, I must disagree with both of you.

This is not so, a G only network can be detected by a B card. I think it was audit who told the story of an access point he installed in G only mode and stumbled with his B card.

I was under the impression that G clients would slow down to 11 mbps and this was the failing of 802.11G. This is, after all, why "G only" modes exist on access points: so one person with a B card doesn't fook the entire shebang.

.

Thats what I said. My reply "Not if the g network is running in "g only" mode" was to the fact that a "b" client cannot connect to an AP in "g" only mode. A "b" card will detect "g" no matter which mode the "b/g" AP is in.

A single b client on a g network will cause a drop in throughput - it doesn't go all the way down to 11mbps but even to be noticeable.

It is a timing issue required for compatibility, and yes, that's why "G only" mode exists.

Way to go, <expletive>. A little searching would have answered your questions. <expletive> n00b.

I guess as newbies, we are here to ask stupid questions...

Maybe thats why were newbies...

Even though searching the forums for answers aint that hard..

To all of you newbies out there, i suggest you do as i did and get the books to read (WDDD & The Wifi Guide & Wireless Hacks) The 40 quid or so if far cheaper than a flame suit..

The learning curve is steep, but its well worth it...

Question Similar Question

I've been trying to help my niece get her notebook with built-in g to connect to several b APs with no luck. Did I miss something? Is it NOT compatible in that direction?
tia,
Michael

Ask the network admin how to connect to the access points. They are probably using some form of security to keep people out. If they won't tell you how to connect, it is probably because you are not supposed to connect. Using a 802.11G card will work with a 802.11b access point.
