Directional grid antenna to repeater/extender?

Hello all. Just a quick question. I see alot being talked about connecting a larger antenna to a card or access point. How about connecting it to a repeater/extender? (I.E. D-Link DWL-800AP+) I am just looking to send some signal (or more reasonably pull in signal) at my detached garage and give my laptop some mobility and don't want to go purchasing the wrong equiptment or chasing something that can't be done. Thanks in advance.

That should work fine. Just don't go crazy with a super high gain omni, you probably don't need it. As Thorn says, do the math and then go shopping.
