First Time War Driving

I have a old Compaq Armada 1700 with a 266mhz p2 cpu, 4GB HD and a D-Link DWL-G650 with the Atheros chipset. I heard a coworker of mine talk about this wardriving stuff and I thought he was lying. He was. I did some searching and found this site and asked him about things I found on here. He didn't know about simple things like aircrack and commview wifi. I asked him how he was getting into the networks and he said he was just using netstumbler and getting in with that program. I decided to try this out for myself but didn't realize how much goes into just buying the right card and using the right software. I ended up getting a Linksys WPC54g v2 card and it didnt work of course. I didnt do a search on this site before I bought it. I returned it for a D-Link DWL-G650 and it works like a charm. I can't believe how many AP's it picks up on my way to work. Sorry bout the long story. Thanks for making a great piece of software and awesome forum. I just hope my old and slow laptop can handle this and when I get a GPS device.

You don't "Get in" networks with NetStumbler, NS can not do this, and it would be illegal if the network is not yours. NS only detects the networks. It is your card that connects to them. Also, disable TCP/IP. Also, it is illegal to attempt to crack the WEP key for a network you do not have permission to. Just FYI.

Accessing or attempted access of a network you do not own (or have persmission to access) is illegal.

Well I am not trying to break into any networks that I don't have permission to. I'm just looking for AP's. I defintily don't want to get in trouble. I'm happy that my laptop isnt that old to do this stuff with. Now for another round of newbie questions. What book would be best to learn about wifi and wardriving? What other programs besides NS and aircrack should I be using? What sites besides this should I visit and read? Sorry if this has been asked already. If it has on this site, tell me and I will search for them. Thanks again.

"Wardriving Drive, Detect, Defend" and "Drive By WIFI Guide"

Give Kismet a try.

No, not really. Just the A+ cert is soooooooooo easy, that I never saw the need for a study guide. But hey, to each his own, good luck on the test.

The best book for WarDriving is WarDriving: Drive, Detect, Defend It was written my three moderators on these forums, Chris, Mother, and myself. I'm not merely bragging when I say it's the best book on WarDriving, a lot of other people involved in the activity agree.

For a more general introduction to WiFi, Jeff Duntemann's Wi-Fi Guide, Second Edition is the best book. If you're just starting off, read Jeff's book first, and then our's. Jeff's starts off at a beginner level, and moves you up to an intermediate. Our book is more intermediate to expert.

Well those 2 books I will be getting for sure. I want to see if I can use the Hot Spot at the book store when I go. I have never really did any kind of networking since I live in a remote spot with no broadband internet yet. I have only done p2p networking with the 2 PC's I have at home. Until either I get a new/used laptop, I wont be using Linux on this machine. It has intergrated winmodem and it won't work with any Linux OS. Plus I need a mobile Windows OS solution for helping my friends and family when they need help with their PC's. If only they sold laptops for 300 bucks. LOL. Thanks again for all your advice guys.

Little known secret about buying PC's. Check with your local PD's and sherrif's office when they sell stuff out of the evidence locker. Many times things go unclaimed, evidence is no longer needed for a case and it's sold off. Stolen laptops get sold all the time if they can't be returned to the owner because the owner wasn't smart enough to write down the SN.

Ya never know what you might find at those sales.

Unfortunately, most of the time, there is a reason that they don't claim them, especially with the vehicles.

Bloodstains and bullet holes never really hurt anyone. Well, at least after they've dried and the shooting was over..
