g3n3r1cw8p

I've seen SSID "g3n3r1cw8p" in widely separated locations. Wigle shows it 272 times. Anyone know if that's a vendor default, or appearing in a "Dummies Guide to Idiots" book? Google in no help.

Any idea if the MAC address maps back to a common vendor?

That part is obvious! The thing that's not so obvious is why so MANY would come up with it. I think it's more than that. I also found it in a listing here

I don't have my listing handy... anyone have the vendor lists avialable? The mac is listed. I guess you could probably snag it off Wigle too.

There is a vendor lookup here:

The one I have listed in my own personal DB maps back to a Z-Com.

OUI = 0060B3

When I search my Db for Z-Com as a vendor I find about 60 (from 7200+). It would seem the default SSID for Z-Com is Connectionpoint

Ok. Z-Com?

Looks like 99% of the ones in Wigle are Z-Com (00:60:B3).
There are a couple of 00:40:96 and 00:90:4B and a 00:30:ab. Since they don't appear in the database, it's possible someone has changed their MAC.

I wonder if it's an ISP that's sending them out? Seems like too much of a coicidence, that they'd all be the same brand, and use that notation.

Yeah, except that the first few times I saw it (on my crappy laptop screen, without ClearType), I wondered why someone was using "General Cwap" as an SSID!

To quote some fellow old people, "What a drag it is getting old."

Interesting. I used the IEEE link you posted, and it reported no matches. Keeping the good list for yourself, eh?

Edit: Ok, cancel that. Apparently, 00:30:ab isn't in there, but 0030ab is. Other vendors do have the colon-separated versions.

There's probably some article/FAQ out there that tells people if you write your SSID in l33t then hackers will stay away from you and it gives an example of what l33t is. So everyone used it.

Too many sheeple in the world.

I used the same link! Maybe the site is flaky, or did you make sure to replace the ':' with '-' for the search?

EDIT: Ok saw your edit. I didn't know you could leave all the punctuation out, but had been using the '-' format with no problems. The search form recommends that, so it might be safer than no punc at all. Who knows?
