Wardriver's don't access anything, therefore they cannot be identified.

Criminals access networks they are not supposed to, therefore there are ways for them to be identified.

Wardrivers care NOT about whats on your LAN.

as for catching someone attaching to your network..

google for "airsnare" its a nice IDS program (and there are a slew of others) that you tell it what MAC address's are on your network, then if any non listed MAC's pop up, it sounds an alarm.

How can the authorities identify a wardriver ?

There is certain firmware on certain APs that keeps a log of who is connected to your AP, what bandwidth they are using, their IP address and their mac ID....I know of one for the Apple Airport graphite written in java by a college professor named sevy named "Host Monitor" which will show who is connected to your AP, their IP address and their MAC address.

@ skizziks...I did not realize that an IP and MAc address could identify the criminal, but that sounds enough for me..I also thought that they maybe can record some "invisible but fingerprinted data" from your computer and use against you in a courtecase. No?

the MAC address and IP will not ID who they are (name etc..) but just their network ID

if want a challange you can research IDS and get fancy. I know of a guy who has a home BSD network that runs IDS packages, that not only does it record the MAC, IP etc.. but it starts a packet capture on everthing it does.

but research your voodoo and practice it.. and soon you will be a BOFH

We run an IDS system on our webserver we have at a Co-Loc, I regularly generate reports from it and report offenders to their ISP for abuses. Most of the time the offending IP's we never hear from again.
