How can I use TV antenna for my wireless?
Hey
I have a large television antenna on my house--probably ~50-60ft off the ground. What I would like to do is use this as an antenna for me and my friends (neighbors) dsl/network. For a while we've been running cat5 between are houses but we would like to go wireless. I currently have an Orinoco PCMCIA card in my laptop. I've been told there is a Coax-pcmcia card adapter available but I havnt been able to find it. The antenna is about 100ft from the AP, straight line of site despite a wall or two. My plans (what I'd like to do anyway) is use the coax cable thats running from my antenna into my house and use it to plug into my Orinoco card OR buy a 2.4GHz 5dBi Desktop Omni Antenna for the inside of my house/computer room. Thanks! -Mike Last edited by twentydead : 06-27-2004 at 03:31 PM. |

without alot of modification to the antenna, you can't. Would be easier to add a secon antenna to the tower.

Alright. If I were to mount a Secon or omni directional antenna to the top of the antenna, what cable and/or adapters will I need to plug it into my Orinoco card or omni desktop antenna into the new antenna(just using the TV antenna to mount)? Thanks for the help

After a few feet, the signal loss due to natural resistance from the cable run would reduce your signal output to the point of being almost useless. To overcome this you would need a radio/repeater/bridge inbetween your network and antenna. The closer to your antenna the better.
Your PC card will not have enough power to use a commercial grade omni directional antenna with any real distance. |

You're missing the point. Your signal will never reach the antenna. These are VERY low signal radios. In order to do this, you would need low loss cable ($$), plus an onmi antenna.
A cheaper alternative is an exterior mounted Access Point, although it means som investment in time and effort. Search on "PoE".
