Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG NIC

Most documentation seems to indicate that the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG NIC card (standard issue in my Dell Latitude laptop) cannot be used to sniff. It seems that this is the case b/c the card cannot be put into an "RF Monitor" mode. I'm trying to use Airsnort and Airopeek, neither of which are able to pull any data.

So, (1) are there any sniffers out there that can use the Intel card or (2) is it totally possible that I can simply buy a new, more compatible NIC for my laptop? If I need to get a new card, what's the best card to get?

Thanks.

You will not be able to use windows to use monitor mode with the 2200BG NIC, however, you could use Linux.

Please consult the wildpackets web site for a list of cards compatible with their drivers if you are planing on using the AiroPeek Drivers.

Thanks for the super-fast response.

Linux is like Korean to my as-s, so I'm probably better off getting a new card. These things are modular, right (like mini-PCI)? My question on an alternative NIC was meant more towards the point of is there a preferred card that performs better than most. Thoughts? Anybody? Anybody? Beuller?

No time like now to download a live distro and start learning.

Knoppix
Auditor

Are two I use.

For an alternative card look for these chipsets (in no particular order).

Prism (any but 3), Senao has a good one.
Hermes, Orinoco Classic Gold (I'm about to shelf mine due to some new equipment on the market and the dreaded Orinoco Error 0005).
Atheros, Proxim and a few others use this one.

I have a Senao NL-2511CD Plus EXT on the way right now. 200mW and pretty good RX sensitivity.

Where did you buy it(Senao NL-2511CD Plus EXT)? And how much was it?

I've been looking to pick one up myself.

Ebay $53. It looks like the Demarc has a slightly better receive sensitivity.

Do you happen to remember if the seller had any more? Was that after shipping?

The cheapest I think I found was $60-$65. before shipping, but I haven't looked in the past couple of weeks.

I would like to get one, but my Orinocos are still working good enough that unless I find a really good deal I can't justify spending the money right now.

Yeah, but the Demarcs are quite pricy aren't they.

I have been getting a rash of error 0005 and the problem I expect is not going to get any better. There are a couple more on ebay now, looks like they will go $50 plus. Yeah the Demarcs are $119 from Demarc.

Yeah I saw the thread about a lot of people having that error and the Belkin APs etc. I don't think I have seen it much.

I use an SMC card a lot of times for NS. I have one Gold card that I use as backup for NS and one that I use for Kismet.

Maybe next week I'll be able to get a Senao.

If you are getting another card, then pick up an Atheros based one as well. Well supported under *nix, and partly supported under the current NS. Marius indicated some time ago on the NS mailing list, that the next version of NS would have full support for the Atheros based cards.
I've got an extra of the Topcom 3054 b/g PCcards laying around, that have a Hirose u.fl connector, under the extruding black plastic part, which could be modded to a better connector. Holler if interested, and I'll swap it for your Classic Gold.

First of all sorry for replying to an old post. But I was under the impression that since the Intel Pro 2200 doesn't support monitor mode, that you couldn't use it to sniff or crack WEP encryption. King Ice Flash posted that "however, you could use Linux." Is that true that it will work in Linux? I've tried an old Knoppix STD cd I've had for a year or 2 with no luck, but didn't spend too much time on it because I didn't think it was possible with my card. Also if it is possible, is it because you don't need to have monitor mode? Or does linux somehow enable monitor mode? Thanks for any help.

Did you read the rest of what his post said? Did you go check out the wildpackets website and see if your card is better supported now than when that post was made?

Old linux distros are nortorious for having out of date software, since the releases are far in between. Try the new copy?

Yes. I looked at the site and it does not list my card. But I thought maybe it was still possible without using AiroPeek, but I doubt it.

Thats why you have "utility" cards. Aka cards that are supported for wardriving, packet gathering etc... the Intel 2200 bg is good for connecting to your network.

Yep alot of the regulars here have 5 wifi-cards in their tool kits.
Most have at least;
1. Orinoco Gold (Hermes)
2. Prism 2
3. Atehros
4. Cisco 350*
5. Prism 2.5/3
6. Intell/generic(builtin)
Yep alot of cards and they all do something the others can't. Aint it a bitch.
