netstumbler 0.4 runaway resources

Hi,

I'm just trying out the new 0.4 with my Thinkpad A21p and an SMC 2835W card. However, when I start Netstumbler, it never goes passed the welcome screen and starts sucking resources (pins the CPU at a 100% and starts eating memory). Has anyone else seen this or have any suggestions? I'v tried uninstalling and re-installing to no avail.

Jeff

I'd suggest dumping any TSRs you can disable and try again. Do you have your SMC card installed when you start NS? Have you tried starting without the card?

I'm using Win 2000 Pro.

I have tried the program with and without the SMC card installed. I haven't tried disabling the TSRs so I'll have to give that a go.

I have the same 100% and memory problem

Loaded up Netstumbler .4 on a Windows 2000 SP4 laptop last week. Using a Netgear WG511 card. It's been working OK for a couple of days, but today I just started experiencing the issue where netstumbler seems to hang up on the splash screen. CPU goes to 100% and memory starts getting chewed up to the point where I get a low virtual memory warning. I haven't put on any updates, patches or changes since installing netstumbler. Card still works fine connecting to my AP, but something is funky with netstumbler...

i believe i read somewhere that smc cards are hit or miss in 2k. i have a 2635w and it works ok, but I have to choose the NDIS 5.1 from the device menu.

NS works well as long it has a connection to an AP. If I leave my AP and loose the signal, NS starts to eat memory at 100% CPU. Coming back into the influence of the AP gets back network connection, but not NS! (Dell Inspiron 4000, Netgear 511, W2k SP3)

Solution: Newest Driver from Netgear (V.5.0)

Netstumbler shouldn't be used while connected to your AP, that's not its purpose and it's likely to make your connection unstable as makes your card cycle through the channels.

I have a Toshiba Satellite S353 laptop with Win2k on it and what happens when I run version .4 is the AP appears for about 30-60 seconds as active then it stops scanning.. the screen shows NO Active AP's and the laptop is sitting in a room about 25 feet from the AP. I thought it might be too close the AP (like that would make a difference) so I took laptop outside on my patio, about 50 feet away.. same results.

I tried reverting back to version .3 which worked fine before i loaded .4, now if I un-install .4 and go to 3, the same thing happens..
What I am thinking about trying is .4 on a win98 and see if the issue follows.
