Network Management Tools From A Seperate Location

So, I’m having trouble deciding how to manage my fathers network while I’m over seas. Ideally I would like to have as much flexibility with management as possible. By flexibility, I mean that I would like to be able to use as many tools as possible to help monitor traffic and help troubleshoot him while I’m gone.

I’m aware of ethereal’s limitations requiring me to be on the same hub as him but is there anyway around that? In example, I’m running a server (in the midst of studying for my MCSE….which is an entire different story) on a PC which is behind his router, so I’m wondering about a VPN? I don’t know much about them and so I’m wondering if this is something I should start to research for my cause? Or is there a better option/direction that I should choose? I have also considered using terminal services to my server and managing through it, but it isn’t a very well equip (minimum requirements) server….yet. (It was put together on a limited budget just for my studies).

None of this is meant to be illegal (I do have my fathers permission), I hope that I am not crossing any boundaries for I am not intending to!

If anyone has a suggestion or knows of any additional tools to research, any help would be much appreciated!

I'd suggest a different forum (such as Practically Networked.) This is a WIRELESS networking forum. Remote monitoring/control is a different subject entirely.
