Not broadcasting a ssid does that make it secure

Here is the setup i have a wireless router and i plan to put a ssid, but not broadcast it. Also there wont be any computers hooking up to the wireless portion because i paid little for the router and what to use it only for desktop computers which have regular lan cards. (btw there is no way to turn off the wireless i checked already) The other thing is i dont want to turn on wep cause its un-necessary. So is the system secure?

Is it? I'd turn it on.

No, it's not. I'll be able to see it with Kismet and a criminal would be able to connect and steal your bandwidth.

Just to be sure I'd remove the antenna and put a 50ohm resistor from tip to ground on the connector to terminate the signal.

Uh Mike,

If you don't like an answer, don't report it to the mods. We have enough to do with real complaints then deal with someone that doesn't like an answer.

And yes The Other's is right, turn it on since it's still a gateway to your system from the outside. SSID broadcast or not.

Most APs have a option in the configuration to disable the wireless, but you might have to download an update.

First you say that WEP is unnecessary but then when you report a post you say that "everyone knows that WEP makes it a little more secure".

Make up your f*cking mind, junior.

wait a sec ... are you saying that kismet sees the ssid even if no one is connecting to the wireless router. See that doesnt make sense cause i would think it would require at least one user to connect and then based on the packet he sends kismet would get the response.

As for wep i could care less if its on or off i am trying to just answer another question is turning off the ssid and having no one connecting to it wireless secure? (i want to introduce as few variables as possible, Sorry)

Yes, it could. I have had kismet find the SSID when NO ONE was connected wirelessly to the network. I don't know why.

No, you don't "turn off" the SSID. Start using proper punctuation or kiss your posts goodbye. You need to do more reading than posting because I sense a major bitch-slapping in your future as a result of your extreme lack of basic knowledge.
