problems running atlas 2003 and NS

Hello,

I currently use a serial earthmate. I have a serial to usb adapter hooked up into my laptop (I don't have serial ports on this laptop). It seems to work great however, Only one app can take up a com port at a time. I saw there are two ways to go about this:

1. I was reading thru the forums, I noticed a program called "WiMap"? I looked it up on google and their link is down to d/l it. I'm guessing you can convert ns log files somehow and maps into a combo? are there are other programs that do that? If I try to run NS alone, It says GPS position not fixed. but Atlas works fine.

2. I tried running port splitter programs. nearly crashed my OS a few times. any specific ones recommended? or is there another way to go about this? the programs I tried so far were port splitter and xport.

Thanks in advance.

What do you mean several places? Is this with multiple files?

Well no. What I mean is for example say I'm at my house, and let's say my SSID is "AP1". When I import the NS log over to Street Atlas, I see "AP1" at my street but then I see a bunch more access points with the same SSID several blocks away from me. I have quite a unique ssid and my range doesn't reach that far without my antenna, so I'm sure those are not real. I'm not sure why its doing it. Could it be lack of accuracy?

What netword card? I've seen this happen with my DLink DWL-G630 seeing my AP, or even others I've previously seen during that session, many kilometers away (one of these included seeing my neighbors AP, which has a very unique name, show up on the university campus in calgary... which is a good 40km away from home). Typically ejecting the card or rebooting the computer will fix this, however you may have the data in the logs still unless you manually sort through the summary and remove it.

While your SSID might seem unique, the BSSID/MAC is more likely to be unique.

Alternatively, perhaps the converter program you're using plots the AP wherever it's detected rather than triangulating a position. NetStumbler's "summary" export just has the "strongest" location, other exports (text?) may have more points that could allow better triangulation.

I see. I think I was able to figure it out. However, when exporting is there a better way to make a more detailed summary rather than just use pure text? the current summary is very weak. I wonder if there was a way to summarize AP's even if they show up only once.

Thank you.

Could you elaborate? Have you done a text export vs a summary export?

Tell you what, I'm going to do another run today. I don't want to talk out of my arse since I only wardrove once. Basically, what happened was half of my city showed their access points and the other half showed nothing in summary. When I did it via text, half of the city showed access points as usual but the other half only showed one accesspoint the whole way through. it was a 2wire ap.

After another day of wardriving and merging the logs I recieved much more accuracte results. I had another program running in the background that I forgot to shut down.

The ns1 logs look great, the summary logs look great. However, importing summary logs into Street Atlas only show red flags of each location with their SSID alone. No details about wep or any as such. I've been searching the boards for hours now (must get sleep before school starts). Is there any way to convert it so the AP's show up with green (open)/Red (closed) and so on?

I read in the forums about WiMap and what it can do but no downloads available. when searching about WiMap someone asked about it and was told to export into xml then importing into Street Atlas...however, I think he was talking about 2004.

I also read something about SAStumbler but after I tried it,it made no difference. 2004 mode on or off.

Answers or Spoilers anyone? Thank you for your time and patience with another newbie. Hopefully I can return the favor a couple of years down the road once I get this into gear.

I got a hold of wimap but i can't seem to change the colors of the flags. it just shows ssid/mac/channel. no wep ability or color difference.

anyone here use wimap still?
