Signal Strength - Help!

Hi All,

I am using NetStumbler, atesting the signal strength. I have two devices I am testing. One is a 200 mW, and the other is about 50 mW (Senao and Linksys).

When comparing their signal strenths they are about the same (about 75 dB) just a couple of feet from my computer. I place them both about 50 feet away, and again, about the same signal strength (about 50 dB).

Does anyone know why this may be happening? I'd expect that the signal to be higher on the 200 mW Senao!

Thanks,
Mike

Kangaroo??

You do realize that NS measures the signal strength of the AP of which it's detected, not the Card. Unless you have your cards in Ad-Hoc mode and you're testing from another machine.

AND your card is supported AND properly reports SNR AND you've read the directions AND you know what your doing.

Using my wireless card on my laptop with NetStumbler installed, I am able to detect several AP's. Of the two I am testing one is high power and the other is not. I am still unsure why the signal strength is similar? I have the two test AP's co-located and on different channels.

Any additional help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You are testing two APs or two NICs? What are the models?

And what NIC do you have installed in your notebook which is running NS?

Have you read the README about what cards are supported and in what fashion?

Have you tried it with them powered up one at a time? I get some funky results when I look at signal stregths and SNR with all of mine (4) powered up at once (and they are all on different channels). What channels are your APs on? You may also want to try them on the same channel if you try them one at a time as the things are usually optimally tuned for the middle of the band (channel 6). Not sure if it will make that big of difference but hey it won't cost anything to try it.

You do realise that you are wasting your time trying to use NS to compare Signal Strength on different devices?

You see if your card is not fully supported then really no one can help you with anything that NS is telling you. I suggest you forget about using NS to help you with your problem.

Believe me, this really is being helpful.

Try the Whirpool Broadband Forums instead if you are looking for another kind of help.

Cheers

So apparently you have your panties in a knot because you have unsupported hardware and feel that it's somehow NS's fault that it won't report accurate measurements with said hardware?
