Starting blind and from scratch
Being new, I am starting from scratch...As my profile indicates, I am an author in the process of writing my second book on the Chesapeake Bay. Will be eight months on my boat and need to be connected to the internet.
Three things.: 1) Bought the card to connect to WiFi...In order to install the softwear, need an SSID #...What is it? 2) If it is a membership #, which company best covers the Chesapeake Bay and does it have various membership categories...billing monthly, seasonally ( on a boat ), or just yearly? 3) Cost est. Thanks jamj |

Try a Google search on 'wifi hotpsots', see if you can find any located within the areas of the Bay that are close to the water. You can then check with those folks to see what their requirements are with respect to membership and coverage. It's a starting point. Try 'Maryland wifi' as well.

Checked Google...The FAQ section helped...i.e., don't have to subscribe to a specific server...So, final question ( at least for the moment )....What the heck is an SSID number? For whatever reason, I have to put this number (a number) in when I install the softwear.

See peekitty's definition of "ESSID". The SSID is the name of the wireless access point. You shouldnt need to know it to install any software. You will need to know it, however, to connect to an access point. Your choosen wireless provider will be able to inform you as to their specific details.

So...what you are saying is...although I do not need to subscribe to a specific server to put in the softwear...based on the info received from Google's FAQs sheet, I still have to have a server in order to get the SSID number....Sounds like Catch 22....

And to clear things up, the SSID doesn't have to be a number. Do the following, this is the last time I'm going to try and explain:
