Thanks for your help.

Over the past couple of weeks, my 15 year old grandson, my son, and I have gone out wardriving around the Plano, TX area. Plano is a suburb of Dallas. This was the first thing the three of us have done anything together in a long time. After all, what 15 year old boy wants to "hang" with his grandfather? We had a lot of fun and were amazed at the number of wireless networks we detected. I would guess that 60% had no security at all.

Since I do not have "MapPoint 2004", we were not able to try the mapping scripts. After checking on the price of the software, I doubt we will be doing that anytime soon.

Even without the ability to map the locations, we had a lot of fun; and, I just want to thank each of you for your assistance in helping me get started.

Next project for the three of us is to see if we can hack my wireless network. We thought it would be fun to keep increasing the security level after each successful hack and try it again.

We have been doing a lot of research on the topic of WEP hacking. Currently we find it very confusing. It seems as though most of the programs are written for the Prism 2/2.5/3 chipsets. My Orinoco has a Hermes chipset.

We changed the router security settings from WPA to WEP 128 and to transmit b and g signals. We also downloaded a cd called Auditor and successfully installed it on the hard drive of my Pavilion N5490 laptop.

I know this is going to be quite a challenge and that we will need help. I am also aware that this forum does not help people hack their network; so, if any of you know of a forum where we could go with our questions, please let me know.

You can map them post-process with any mapping software that allows inport of a LAT/LON file.

How were you made aware of the fact that "this forum does not help people hack their network"? And I think the term you want is cracking not hacking. Have you tried the web pages for the applications you are using (that would be the best and logical place to look). There is also a couple tutorials on the web (google is your friend).

It seems like I have read a few posts flaming people who were trying to hack their network and that they were told that this forum was not for that kind of help. If I misunderstood, I apologize.

I have been looking at some of the software web sites, Kismet for example. At this point I still get easily confused about some of the terms used. For example, I just saw that the Orinoco uses two Hermes chipsets, I and II. I have searched but can not tell how to determine which one my Orinoco Gold Classic has.

Anyway, if it is permissible to discuss cracking my network here, then that would be great.

Thanks,

I believe what you saw was people that in one way or another admitted they weren't trying to crack their network but someone else's and then tried to backpedal.

This is true, if it walks like a duck, smells like a duck, looks like a duck....

For someone that is sincere in their search for knowledge, this forum will not spoon feed you. Everyone here will help by pointing you in the right direction (if that direction is a legal one), which will be a more enjoyable quest for knowledge.

I am glad to see you are having a fun time. The time I spend wardriving with a few friends of mine are spent catching up with each other's lives, talking about new technologies, and listening to Coast to Coast AM. It just seems to be a social thing for us. I am glad you found a hobby to bridge the generation gap

In regards to a 15yr old hanging with his grandfather it's too bad more young people don't want to do that.

I learned a shitload of stuff from my grandfathers and still fall back on their wisdom much of the time. My last living grandparent is now 92 and I still enjoy listening to his stories (no, none about taking the ferry over to shelbyville).

More kids should hang out with there grand parents, The old school aint so bad. May be they would be more respectful, and do a little thinking for themselves.. Then spending 10min (if even) with something they have to think and figure out themselves. I'd spend a week at fiquring out an electrical schematic for a basic selsyn control circuit, at the age of ten.

I can just see your grandson wearing a T-shirt that reads "My Grandpa is a Wardriver"

While it won't work with the scipts, Microsoft's Streets & Trips is their low-cost mapping program (MSRP ~$35; Street Price ~$20). You can still use it to plot APs as a post-WarDrive process.

If you find them or get them custom made, you MUST post a picture of you and the grandson wearing them..
