universal pcmcia to usb
I would like to use my pcmcia wireless cards(i.e. Orinoco,Cisco, Senao) with a computer (running windows XP) that doesn’t have a pcmcia slot, but it does have a USB port. I noticed a lot of pcmcia/USB converters seem to be proprietary and will only work with one type of pcmcia card(i.e. Orinoco USB client). Does anyone make a pcmcia card slot that attaches to a computer via usb, that will recognize pc cards like Cisco or Senao, or are there universal drivers available that can turn the orinoco USB client into a pcmcia slot that will read lots of different PC cards? Or is there a roundabout way of accomplishing universal pcmcia to USB (i.e. USB to PCI, then PCI to pcmcia)?

You can buy a PCMCIA to PCI adapter (basically a PCI card that adds a PCMCIA slot to the back of your computer). Most of these adapters are generic and not tied to a particular card. I don't know of any PCMCIA to USB adapters.

Finding PCMCIA to PCI adapter
Been looking for PCMCIA to PCI adapter for XP desktop system. Couldn't find. Do you have a clue where? Meanwhen bought Netgear 54mbps 802.11g USB adapter thinking I could use that. Hasn't yet but current location could be the problem. (Travel remote areas in RV.) If I installed PCI adapter and got a card would that give more range. When I see another RV with rooftop internet gear we talk tech. I'm obviously dumb and they want to help so next time I want to have the right equipment on hand.

You can head on over to http://www.fab-corp.com, click on Accessories, and look for the RICOH chipset PCI adapter. It's $34.99.

JanHerman: What's the problem with the USB adapter, are you having trouble making it work with NetStumbler? USB could be the way to go in your RV if you can get it up above the roofline. The range could probably be increased further with an antenna hack.
NinjaPablo: I wasn't aware of any USB-PCMCIA bridges other than the Orinoco unit until I saw one of these units from Zcomax on eBay the other day. Apparently it only works with their Xi-300 card and it didn't get any bids... Last edited by peekitty : 06-15-2004 at 05:21 AM. |
