Warning Learner within
Back from my vacation & the books i ordered arrived today..
Made a start on wddd and then onto wireless hacks.. (not too complex so far but i do have netowrk experience and have done some side banding in my time) Oh yeah ordered Jeff Duntemann's WiFi Guide as suggested by Thorn. Anyways a few questions regarding kit that i would like suggestions on. Is this PCI card going to be ok? http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...?ProductID=710 Ive read about some issues regarding chipset types not working with netstumbler.. The antenna.. I keep thinking about a yagi of some type on my roof with a rotator to be able to move around (has anyone done this?) Im guessing that due to the narrow bandwidth of the yagi it would also have to look up and down slighty? Any thoughts on where to buy a good yagi and rotator in the uk ..I know of solwise as ive bought plent of kit off them in the past..routers ip phones etc.. anyone else though? Thanks, kit suggestion welcomed.. Guess im just wating for one of you guess to say "Sod off and get reading then come back.."

This Setup Prob. won't work for you as PCI card based NIC's like this
will not work with Netstumbler. If you want to go with something like this then get the following: 1 x PCMCIA to PCI Converter card (Rioch Chipset) 1 x Classic Orinoco Gold

Watch out, you're going to get loads of loss from the cable between your pc and the roof. I suggest buying a USB orinoco classic and positioning it very close to the antenna.

Thanks..
Any ideas where i can buy a "USB orinoco classic" in the uk..? This is going to work ok with netstumbler isnt it? Ive seen "proxim" versions but arnt they the ones to avoid due to chipset incompatabilites? Also if im going to run a usb network adaptor as near to the external antenna as possible isnt there a max distance that the usb lead can be..?

Yeah, they work great with netstumbler. And yeah, well done on noticing the differences with the Proxim, crap, cards.
As for getting hold of one... I've seen them on ebay.co.uk a few times, they're expensive though. You can get them off expansys.com for stupid amounts of money, far much more than they're worth. The best price is fond on ebay.com, but, you'll have to get it shipped from the US, this shouldn't be a problem, I've done it before. As for a max USB cable distance, this is something I know little about. ![]()

Next stop expansys.. price isnt realy a problem as i can put this through the accounts as research on work's behalf..
I guess this will also mean i will me running my internal nic and a usb one... The internal intel one atm goes (wired) into my Draytek Vigor 2500 Router/hub... and onto 2 pc's (soon to be wirless) Also plugged into the router is my Linksys 54g which will sort my wirleless connectivity to the router... Im guessing netstumbler will have no problems ignoring all this and will only see the usb nic.. Confusing this aint it.. Thoughts on the setup.. Still looking for a uk supplier of a nice high db yagi and rotator... Thanks...still reading here..

Carnt seem to find a usb orinoco classic on expansys anywhere... only proxim ones...
Any other uk suppliers? buying of ebay is not ideal... Am i looking for a dicontinued model then as all the ones out there seem to be proxim's.. If i did get internal on and fitted it into a pci converter, would the loss through the coax be that substanial? even if i bought the best low loss cable i could get.. I used to have industrial cable connected to my 18ft wide yagi many years ago... i didnt run that for long though as the police arrived an hour after i put it up LOL

You can buy a yagi off wirelesspro.co.uk or solwise.co.uk As for a rotater, again, I've got no idea. It's not something I've ever had to look into. You'll probably have to get something less than ideal and mod it.
