WEP cracking

I'm completely new to this stuff, as i'm doing it for a university project. The posititon i'm in at the mo is that i have a PC, Linksys AP, and a dell AXIM 5 PDA.

I'm trying to crack WEP encryption, but what i really want to know is do i need a wireless card in my PC to monitor what i'm going to be doing? I plan to ping flood my PC from my PDA, and capture this information on my PC.

Can someone recommend a good packet capturing software? I have ethereal but someone told me this won't capture 802.11 traffic.

And if i do need a a wireless card to monitor my wireless traffic can anyone recommend a good 1.

Thanks

Ehhh ... dual boot linux or use Knoppix - Kismet and AirSnort to capture and crack? There's a ton of good info in the forums ... but using a 3rd PC from a friend might be the best way. I believe you need to be able to natively capture the packets as they flow ... and you need to capture a few million packets I believe. A PDA pinging a PC might not be adequate ... but I dunno. I would think that you would need the following:

1 802.1x AP with PC attached
1 Laptop / PC transmitting with WEP to the AP (using a wireless NIC)
1 Laptop / PC with knoppix (or any linux distro) and kismet/airsnort installed (using a wireless NIC).

Then I'd transfer an ISO image or something big across to the PC via the AP. Use kismet/airsnort to pick it up and log the packets ... then break 'em down. That's probably a lot of gear and it can be done cheaper ... but that's the setup I'd have in mind IMHO. Good luck man ... if you were in my area, I'd offer some boxes to test on.

You may not necessarily need two PCs.
Just one with two wireless NICs.
