Strange. Don't they show up in device mangler at all? List the cards you've tried so far.

So the PC Card based ethernet card works fine... but not the 802.11? Or is the xircom one not PC card?

If that is the case, check the bios to make sure the PC card slots are enabled. I've seen a similar occurance like this before on a compaq and that was the cause.

similar issue

im having a somewhat similar issue with my sony pcg-fr130 laptop and my linksys g card. xp will recognize the card just fine and install and such, but it wont seem to connect to any networks, my home network nor the one at work. i have double checked all the settings twice, tried new drivers, updated my bios, changed some settings in xp, and nothing seems to work.

the card works great in NS btw... just not for regular network usage....

any ideas?

What connection manager are you using? The standard WZC one? I know personally I've had a hell of a time getting some linksys cards to work with the linksys program... but uninstall that and install winc, and it works fine.
