Will Cantenna reach past 1 NY block and 2 streets?
My friend is willing to share his wireless signal with me. He is broadcasting with a Linksys 802.11g router. However, a block separates us, with a street surrounding his and my side. Line of sight is obstructed, as there are houses (around 4 in the path) on this block.
Cantenna has a 12dbi gain and I plan to attach it to my laptop PCMCIA card. Will the Cantenna be strong enough to reach past this 1 block and 2 streets in suburban Queens, NY? Any types of reply will be greatly valued. |

Probably not dude. Line of sight is very important. If you can go OVER the houses, you will have a much better chance. Trees are your enemy. Especially evergreens. The more elevation on both ends you have, the better shot you will have. Do a search for "fresnel zone".
Oh, and GO SOX! I only taunt you because the friggin' Yankees have knocked my Twins out of the playoffs 2 years in a row now.

What if I put parabolic reflectors (http://new.freeantennas.com/prod01.htm) on the router, increasing its range to 12dbi
+ plug a cantenna (12dbi gain) onto the PCMCIA card? Will this theoretical 24dbi gain be enough to get a signal or halfway decent signal? Has anyone experienced or know if the cantenna will work in this case? What is the likelhood? here's what the folks at cantenna had to say about my question: Thank you for your inquiry. You are well within the range of the Super Cantenna, however it is extremely difficult to let you know with certainty whether it will work in your situation. There can be many limiting factors, such as line of site issues, building materials or other types of interference. Please keep in mind that if you wanted to try the Cantenna in your situation, we do offer a 30 day refund policy in case it does not work for you. Please let me know if I can answer any further questions.
