Will this work? (My first post....)

Hi All,

This is my first post so please cut me some slack if I'm out of line!

I have 2 laptops. One is running WinXP Home and has a built in 11g card that NetStumbles works with just fine. This computer is connected to the Direcway link via the LAN port. All this works fine.

The second computer is another laptop running WinME. I want to put a USB to 11g device on it and let it connect to the internet via computer #1.

I also want to use this USB to 11g device with computer #1 when we are on the road to find systems that I can pay to use without having to be right on top of them.

Here's my questions: Does the Lucent gold come in 11g? All I have been able to fine via Google searches is 11b.

If I wind up using an 11b device I understand that it will slow the network down to it's speed. But if computer #2 is using 11b to connect to computer #1, will that effect the speed seen by computer #1 on the LAN connection? I don't think it will but am not sure. In other words I **think** that computer #1 will still see whatever speed the Direcway system is going at any given time while computer #2 will never exceed 11b speed. Right??

Just to clairfy the object of this whole project.... We full time RV. The second computer is for my wife and will be used for email and not much more. And the Direcway system will be set up in most cases. But during trips it would be very nice to be able to use the WiFi connections offered (for a price) by places like Loves truck stops without having to stop in their lots which can get noisy. This would often make more sense than setting up the Direcway system in the rain and etc!! (I really want one that I can connect an external antenna to.)

I was going to ask where you all find places to buy good equipment but looking at the posts today I'd say that Ebay gets that nod. 3 days have been spent reading the FAQ's, other posts and the NetStumbles info all without being able to find the answer to the above questions. So if someone has someplace for me to check please let me know where.

Thanks,

Monte Stark

Look at FAB-Corp for equipment. Most of us buy there because of good prices, quick service and a good selection of what we need.

Hi Thorn,

Thanks for the fast reply and good info. The one detail I left out is that the unit needs to be USB as only one laptop has a pcmcia slot.

On Ebay I see both Gold and Silver Orinoco cards in a USB configuration. They are just those pcmcia cards set up to use a USB port or so one of the sellers says.

Is that true and if so can you still add an external antenna?

Is there any major difference between Gold and Silver?

Thanks again for your help,

Monte Stark

Gold does 128 bit encryption while silver does 64. Silvers can be reflashed to gold. Some of the USB orinocos had a pcmcia card in them. This means you could put the external connector on them.
