Wireless Technical question
Hey there - I've got a question about Wireless NDIS. It's not about Netstumbler, but I was curious if anyone here would answer my question[s] or link me to a good faq or document.
Specifically, it's about Multicasting and Wireless - can it be done? I'm trying to map out a plan if it's possible to use GhostCast to push/pull images to/from laptops over wireless. I've used GhostCast before with Ethernet Nics and I had to have the NDIS driver [which I gather is DOS-based if you're not talking Linux]. Any time I search for NDIS drivers for wireless chipsets I turn up zilch. Am I trying for something that just isn't possible? I've got a basic understanding of wireless and a thorough understanding of networking basics, so don't hold back on explaining yourself techncially. Thanks in advance! |

To answer your question - multicasting and wireless can be done. The network media is irrelevant, what matters is that ip is supported.
Now - if your understanding of networking was as thorough as you'd like to believe, you would know that every network card (both wired and wireless) driver released for use with Microsoft Windows 3.11 or later is an NDIS driver. |

I believe (I haven't used GhostCast, I use ImageCast) the drivers you need to look for are DOS drivers. The question has been asked here before, but there wasn't a definitive answer. The real issue is this: how long will it take to deploy a disk image at 802.11 rates, and are you willing to wait? The nice thing about doing it on the wired side is that I can push out an image to 20 or more workstations simultaneously, and I'm done in 10 minutes. I wouldn't try that with wireless.

Awesome, peekitty; I was curious about the thoroughput myself. We're using an 802.11g AP and adaptors that should be 54Mbps, right? I've yet to find DOS drivers for any wi-fi card we've used, maybe it's a search for Fool's Gold
GhostCast 7.0 has a Boot Disk template for "Wi-Fi Test" but GhostCast 8.0 doesn't. Maybe Symantec found it wasn't feasable to support it. I'll probably end up doing wired imaging anyways, but I think I'll still give it a try. If I run into any success, I'll let you know! It looks like my question wasn't about NDIS after all, fordem. Symantec GhostCast wants NDIS or Packet drivers for DOS - I guess I should have been more specific in my explanation. |

Now - I could be way wrong on this - but I'll chance that. There really aren't that many NDIS drivers for DOS, because DOS was being phased out as the NDIS spec was coming into it's own. I have this theory that Symantec, if they chose to, could write Ghost (or GhostCast) to talk to the NDIS API and make it work with any NDIS driver. The logic behind this theory is that Ghost supports imaging over the USB interface as in you can re-image a disk from a USB based CDROM drive, and there never were USB drivers for DOS. If they can make this happen, then the NDIS driver API is well documented and should be even easier. |
