Your opinion please

I am new to war driving and thinking of buying a kit that consist of the following:

* Orinoco Gold Classic 802.11b Wi-Fi PCMCIA card (NEW)

* Custom plastic protective case for Gold card

* 7.0 dBi PRO magnetic antenna (9" tall) with integrated 5' (60") low-loss cable

* Attractive cork-lined desk stand for antenna with internal ground-plane

* CD with software and articles about Wardriving

* One Year Limited Warranty(*)

The cost, including shipping, is $69US.

What is your opinion of the product and the associated cost?

My opinions, in order:

* Excellant
* Marketing Bullshit. (It comes with the card, it's hardly anything great.)
* Crap. Read this: http://www.netstumbler.org/showthrea...717#post101717 in the the Antenna FAQs
* No idea, but it smells like more BS. The groundplane may help the crappy antenna, although I'd doubt it unless it's at least close to one-square foot.
* The CD it probably in violation of a half-dozen different licenses. Besides, most of this is free to download.
* Hardly a big deal.

You're overpaying since you can get the card for about $30 the crappy antenna for $20 and download the software for free.

Welcome, but beware. The hobby is uncannily addictive. Just remember, it's like the girls down at the boob bar: Look, Don't touch..

If you haven't done so yet, head up to the Welcome Desk section, and read the posts there. Then head down to the FAQ section, and read the post there. That will give you a head start compared to the normal June joiners we get here. If you want something to read in Dead-Tree format, then I'd suggest you get Jeff Duntemans book, and Thorn's book. Read them in that order, then the stuff makes more sense.

As for the confusion, don't worry about that. It won't ever change, but you get better at hiding it after a while
