Does anyone know of any software designed for bluetooth scanning along the same lines as netstumbler for 802.11? I can always use bluetooth manager for pocket pc (on an ipaq 3870) to scan for devices every now and again, however an app which does constant scanning with some audible alert would be nice. I'm aware it just doesn't quite have the same sort of range, but walking around in places where you might find bluetooth devices with this sort of thing running might be interesting.

wow just think of it you would beep past cell phones, tv remote controls, keyboards, mice, tv's, fridges, stereo's and so on. wow that would be cool ish.
It would be cooler if you could findout which channel, frequency it was on as you would then be able to listen into digital telephone conversations. turn the channel of a tv from outside the house, turn up the temp on the oven. Ha. ha ha they think that stumbleing a network will be bad. wow this will kill blue tooth when people start hacking this thing. you could do a drive past a car hack as some one has a hands free set in the car to cell phone. cool you could turn your head and smile as you listen to there conversation. well i dont know how secure Ericson have made there bluetooth phones for this but you can buy your phone then buy a headset to go with it with out any codeing. so how many frequency and channel possibilities are there for bluetooth. it is so cheap to make i dont think there will be much security in it. I was thinking the same thing,
A quick google showed up this If I had a blue tooth card in my PC i'd download the demo. I was thinking of getting a blue tooth mobile but havn't decided. If the price of the PC hardware ever falls I'll give it a go.

Bluetooth "stumbler" on Mac OS X
I know this isn't Pocket PC related, but I just installed the bluetooth developer package on my iBook running Mac OS X and I found that it included a Bluetooth Monitor and a Packet Decoder application -- pretty cool!

Good Prices on Generic Bluetooth 1.1 Equip...
@ http://www.compgeeks.com I saw these for sale BLU1-DNGL - Retail Box - BlueTooth USB Dongle - $49.99 BLU1-DNGL-WB - Plain Box - Bluetooth USB Dongle - $39.99 The USB part is right on the edge of the device, so its far from a stealth install, but it looks like an extender cable is included/can be used. Cheap and small... I might pick one up... onc ei see if this is really as cheap as they get...

The only other low cost bluetooth usb adaptor that I have found is the d-link one from the Apple store. I'm not sure if that one has any kind of driver/support for windows. The BlueZ linux driver webpage lists the d-link as 'untested.' Since I have a mac, I've ordered the d-link, but I need one for my xp box too. The adaptor that compgeeks is selling is a Tecom. This is supported by linux and windows. At $40, I think that's the lowest I've seen on a usb bluetooth adaptor so far. I think I'll pick one up Idealy, I would like a mitsumi usb adaptor - it has a small form factor (same as the d-link) and a windows driver, however I can not find a single US store that sells them. The nearest place to order them is from the UK or Germany.. and shipping costs kill the deal. -Cpt'n |

D-Link Adapter
I ordered a pair of D-Link adapters from eCost a few months back, but am still waiting for stock.
There are quite a few online shops that have the product description saying for PC and Mac but from what I can tell none have received any stock. If these adapters ever hit the stores for PCs they should be good sellers. The price and form factor are great. HcRUL |

Bluetooth Wireless Networking Special
Speak of the devil. CompuGeeks is offering a bundled deal only for $37.50 (URL below). But if you're going to go buy one now, I wouldn't see any reason for it. You don't have scanning software available (How about a NetStumber BE - Bluetooth Edition) and Bluetooth isn't a home consumer product like it's rumored to become in 2005. If anyone has suggestions on how this might be of use for information purposes, I'd like to hear.

Granted bluetooth doesn't have the market penetration in the US that you see in the uk but give it time and you will see more bluetooth enabled products hitting the streets. HcRUL |

Now that I've tried myself I can answer...
I have the following BlueTooth devices:
- Nokia 6310i. - Toshiba Portege 4000. - Anycom CF card. - 3Com USB dongle. So far, the only combination that has worked OK has been the Nokia with the Anycom card - setup went fine first time, connected, and has been working ever since. The 3Com USB dongle installs OK under XP, but every two reboots or so, XP fails to load the drivers for it - which means having to reinstall them. Since BlueTooth uses mostly virtual serial ports to communicate with other devices, each time you reinstall the drivers they create new ports, above the old ones. After a few re-installations, you'll end up with COM56: and such. The Toshiba and Nokia don't talk to each other - they are seen and identified, but no luck at pairing them. I believe this is Nokia's fault, and in the next firmware it will be fixed... All this makes me state: BlueTooth sucks. At least in it's current state of development. The manufacturers are being stupid distributing buggy and defective products, most of which are likely not firmware-upgradeable - this will create a consumer base largely peed off at BlueTooth in general, who will have spent their money in bad products, and will not fork out more money to buy new ones with the problems fixed. Nice idea, poorly implemented, like a lot of nice ideas. A large part of the problem I think is that each manufacturer "interprets" the BlueTooth standard to his own liking, which makes it non-interoperable, the most basic aim of the technology. Cheers, Mother P.S. maybe this should go in the off-topic board? |

But that's all they can do - see eachother. I try to xfer files and get an error. Also, I am trying to code a Bluetooth stumbler for OS X and the actual IOBluetooth framework is incomplete. I think there is hope though. I hear Microsoft will be supporting bluetooth later this year when they start offering their bluetooth keyboards and mice. On the Mac OS X side of things, I think that the Jaguar release will offer better/complete drivers (instead of these 'preview' drivers). So, while I think that things suck now, I'm pretty confident that they will get better in a matter of 2-3 months (maybe sooner?). And yes, maybe this should go in off-topic. Although, maybe netstumbler should create a bluetooth forum? -Cpt'n |
