Can't find WEP-enabled APs?
Hi,
I've got MiniStumbler working with a Compaq iPaq and a WL110 card. A short walk around town revealed a couple of APs, so MiniStumbler appears to be working in some respect. However, I can't get it to find my own AP (a 3Com AirConnect). The AP is set up with MAC address filtering, WEP keys, and of course an SSID. This makes me think that I'm missing a whole bunch of similarly-configured APs around town. The only time I can get it to detect my AP is when I set up the iPaq "properly" to talk to it (i.e., set up the correct SSID and WEP keys). Why can't I see my own AP? What settings do I need to make, both in MiniStumbler and the Compaq Wireless client software, to get this to work? thanks a lot, alec -- |

I don't believe that your problem is with the client or ministumbler. Your AP must be configured to never reply to client generated probes (similar to those sent by netstumbler). My Symbol AP does this same thing. Keeps me from getting stumbled! I think

ESSID broadcast disabled
Your SSID/ESSID broadcast setting in the AP congfig will be set to 'disable' this will stop the AP broadcasting its address (SSID Name) so netstumbler will not know that it is there.
I had the same problem with my symbol kit, sorry dont know how to change the Compaq config setting, check your manual or the Compaq website. |
