GPS On a Jornada 540

Hi I have just bought a jornada 540, with a CF to PC card converter, so I can use my Orinoco silver.

I have a serial GPS reciever which requires a PS2 port for its power. I went and bought a PS2 to USB converter with a coupler but the GPS device doesnt seem to get any power, so I came to the obvious conclusion that it only accepts incoming power. Is there a way round this at all.

I found this http://netstumbler.org/showthread.ph...ht=jornada+540 about modifying the serial cable but it doesnt go into any details.

Can anyone help?

PS2 port generally supplys +5 volts to devices connected to it. Build yourself a 5v battery pack and plug it in.

(I did this a while ago and it worked just dandy for the application I was using at the time.)

Thanx Streaker69,

I know this sounds thick but are there any step by step instructions for it?

Nope, just built it outta my head one day. It isn't rocket surgery. Look up the pin out for a PS2 port. Determine which pins are +5v and Gnd and connect them to the appropriate pins on your GPS.

Google: ps2 pinout
First result:
http://www.burtonsys.com/PS2_keyboar...r_pinouts.html

There are plently of others out there, you might even find one that will tell you how to splice in a 5v supply. A 6v supply (4 AA or 4AAA batteries) will probably work just fine, although you may wish to verify that. Otherwise you may need to drop the voltage.

6v does work fine. that's what I did.

Although, I'm not responsible for any damage the OP does to his own gear.

I checked out my GPS It says its power consumption is 3.3 Volts and 125 milliamps. I know it doesnt matter if your over the volts its the milliamps you have to be carefull with.

That's not exactly true. Over-voltage can destroy internal capacitors used in the power supply. However, if the unit is designed to operate off the 5VDC of the PS2 port, then it's probably OK with 6 volts. Again, check this out further before you impliment a 6 volt source, as I won't be responsible if you let out the magic blue smoke.

You an always build a small voltage regulator circuit to regulate the 5v down to 3.3v. Radio Shack has everything you need including the book on how to build it.

Might cost all of $10.00.

Or just use 3 1.2v cells. which would be 3.6v.

Was it a tantalum electrolytic by any chance? I've see those explode, and the top take off like a bullet. Most film capacitors just seem to smoke and scorch.

Oh sh*t! Better tell that to Teslas' ghost.
(Or those idots (the ones that survived,) on the 500kv tower that consumed a fair amount of brewskis and were 'playing' with the corona discharge in the fog serveral years ago.)

Why do I get the feeling that's a very bad combination? Hell it even sounds bad if you leave the fog out of it.

I thought Corona Discharge was what you had after you had the Brewski's from Mexico?

Pretty sure it was a tantalum. Not much left though. Was attached to a new out of the box ide to firewire adapter. Wasn't working for one of the other techs, so I plugged it into my G5. Damn thing went off like a fire cracker! Luckily my thumb was right on top of the cap so it didn't send crap into my eyes.
