I've been running "The Brick" for the past month without issue with Ministumbler. "The Brick" is a Compaq iPAQ 3650, 32 meg with the dual pcmcia slot sleeve. This includes an extra battery, too. Add a 64 meg CF card for storage (which uses the CF adaptor that came with my sleeve, thank you!) and the rebadged Orinoco gold/Dell TrueMobile wireless card for guaranteed Ministumbler fun!
Dell will tell you they don't have drivers for Pocket PC. Use the Orinoco drivers from the Orinoco/Proxim site and install them on your host pc like you would any Pocket PC application. Here's the tricky part, when you insert the card after installation, the iPAQ will tell you it does not recognize the network card - simply enter the name of the dll for the driver, not the name of the card. In this case, it is WMLUC46.DLL which will allow the iPAQ to start using the wireless card. If you check connections\network adaptors you'll see ORiNOCO PC Card (5 volt) listed. Battery life is respectible, too. I can spend the afternoon stumbling and not get a low battery warning with some simple backlighting power adjustments. I found the Dell card on ebay for $45, too. It has the plug for an external antenna but that will have to wait. Haven't needed it yet. Great reception! |

Here's the version of Orinoco drivers I'm using:
Windows CE Driver v 7.42 and Client Manager v 2.06 I haven't had any issues, even after I had to reload the iPAQ. I mistakenly left the power settings set to always on and drained the battery overnight. Anyway, I run both the Orinoco driver and client manager. I use the client manager to configure profiles for networks that I have permission to connect to. Ministumbler is set to the default settings with the exception of reconfigure card automatically. I check that box everytime. If I hit a snag and the iPAQ freezes, I go for the reset button on the iPAQ. A quick hit of the reset and I'm back up. Do you have the latest Pocket PC OS update applied, too? It's on the Compaq site. Let me know...thanks! |
