Question iPAQ 3850 gps questions

Ok, I've got an offer to buy a compaq iPAQ 3850 for $200, including a single PC card sleeve (Compaq N119?). Now, I'm assuming that ministumbler will run under it, with a Orrinco Gold PC card, but I'm wondering about my options for gps that'll work with ministumbler, but won't interfere with the wifi. I need good navigation software either bundled or available for easy purchase.

I'm currently looking at the Pharos GPS ( http://www.pharosgps.com/products/co...K008_PF022.htm ) since it looks like it'll just plug into the bottom of the pda.

My second option that I'm looking at is ditching the pc card sleeve, in favor of the Navman GPS 3420 ( http://www.navmanusa.com/land/gps3420/index.html )
It's got GPS with the added benifit of also having a CF I/II slot, so I can get a cf-pc card adapter and pick up the Orrinco Gold to fit into that.

They're about the same price, but the second seems like a cleaner, more professional look, and a little more contained as far as extra cables/boxes goes. It has the added benifit of including a mounting bracket, which will be nice.

Anyway, just looking for opinions/advice, thanks for replies. -MrNfector

personally i use my gps (garmin eTrex Legend) with my laptops, and pda (depending on what I feel like)... also on a few different operating systems (you know, windows, linux, pc2002...), at the time I got my gps I thought about all of this, and figured I had chosen correctly since I haven't had any problems with the gps because of the serial interface that works with everyone of my configurations... and that is just damned skippy. (the only issues I have had relating to the gps connection has of course been the usbserial things that were jacking with me on xp and linux at different points in time... )... alas.

I like the idea of being able to move the GPS from system to system as well. I looked at the Pharos one and the Navman, but they seem too confining.

Also, I get much better singal reception when i throw my GPS on the dash (unless the top is down). With the cable pinout that i described earlier (ala Blackwave (the MAN!! ), it works reall well, without too much cabling getting in the way.

Not to mention, once I get one of those tablet pc's, i can use it on there too.. Hopefully they're internal cards will work with MS, otherwise I'll use the same Orinoco Gold I have already.

yes, but....

Yes, but I'm going to mount the entire pda on my dash, and don't plan on using gps with my laptop pretty much at all, as my primary intention for getting gps at all is helping me navigate the confusing city of san diego. I think if it's mounted on my dash, (about center console, where the vents are aproximately) something like the navman might work out pretty well, with a good signal and all that preferably. I think it may be illegal to mount a screen right there, but I'll do what people do with radar detectors here in california, and turn it off if I get pulled over. =)
Also, it seems like it'd be more difficult to put that rig together, and get it configured properly. Now I am fairly technically literate, but I like the kiss idea of not making things any more complicated than they have to be, as the more complicated it gets the more things can go wrong with it. I was mostly wondering if the gps part of ministumbler would work using either the navman or the pharos systems. It seems pretty specific as far as wifi cards go, so I figured it might be the same for gps, or have they standardized that yet? just a few thoughts... once again, thanks for any replies. -MrNfector
