Got the mini GPS today .
it is a Haicom www.haicom.com.tw. its ok but it didnt come with any software for normal windows versions. it came with lots for hpc / ppc the only proble is when it is in a laptop with the pcmcia slots on the left the antenna is pointing down. that doesnt really matter because when im in my car i will have an external one to stick on the roof. One-piece PCMCIA GPS?
The Haicom product looks interesting- can you tell me anything about the price or a US retailer?
I already have a Garmin, but it is big, has extra cables, and needs some source of external power. That's fine for the Laptop setup where I can run it off the keyboard port. I'm tempted by a 'one piece' GPS receiver that has the antenna fixed to the card, but am wondering if it interferes with the Orinoco (Lucent) card, which also has a thick protruding antenna. I use the 'double PCMCIA sleeve'. Has anybody tried this setup with both a GPS and Lucent card in the sleeve at the same time? |

Haicom GPS
The Gps card is a compactflash card, but i placed it into a CF/pcmcia extention card. it works great. you dont need extra power and i have just got an external antenna which plugs in to the head of the card. The antenna has a magnet on it so it sticks to the roof of the car really well.
I am also using a lucent card besidethe gps and i am not finding any problems. USA http://www.cpubarn.com/download.htm Netherlands http://www.i-con.nl UK http://www.directions.ltd.uk http://www.fingertech.co.uk/gps_haicom_cf.html |

Im running an Intermec 6651 HPC, it has WinCE 3.0, mipps, CF port, pcmcia type 2 port, usb, and serial port. I have placed mini stumbler on it running with a Orinoco gold card. i am also running a Haicom GPS CFcard from the CF port. it is giving great readings. the only problem i have now is the 64mb base memory in the unit. i would use one of the ports (CF or PCMCIA) for my extra memory. but now i am restricted to the 64mb internal to run maps and programs.
I would like to know if there is a PCMCIA expansion slot e.g. male in and expand to two females so i could then use this as a double card slot.? Would it work?? this thing only ways 1.9lb so it is small enough |

Limitations of iPaq
A picture of a iPaq with both the GPS and Orinoco cards in the dual PCMCIA sleeve would be great.
I've been using a a CF storage card for most of my data, including saving off ministumbler log files. As you mention, put in a GPS card (PCMCIA or CF) and you lose the option of this extra storage, and are stuck with the built-in 64Mb of RAM for everything. So what you are suggesting is basically the concept of a new even bigger iPAQ sleeve, providing dual PCMCIA plus an additional CF slot? When you start thinking like that, it is time to just give in and buy a subnotebook! |
