MiniStumbler in iPAQ 3870?

Anyone here successfully configured iPAQ using Orinco or Cisco wireless PC card?

Please let me know and share your experience on how to configure it.

Thanks in advance.

I plan to get the latest iPaQ (or whatever is on the shelf at Fry's, or Circuit City)in a few weeks and set this up with an ORiNOCO Card. My Laptop freezes too much, hopefully I will have better luck with the iPAQ.

I have a 3650 and it has about 50-75% of the range that my laptop does with the same Orinoco card. I don't know it this is a driver issure or a limitations of the Ipaq to provide enough power to the card.

the ipaq is easy. for the orinoco just download the latest drivers
from agere:

ftp://ftp.orinocowireless.com/pub/so...0/WLCE3074.exe

install and plug the card into your sleeve.

Hmmm... I wonder if someone has come up with adding some type of external power booster to the sleeve (didn't someone mention that the older sleeves have external power jacks?, or was that for another brand?)... I would like to have the optimal coverage since I plan on plugging the iPAQ into the cig lighter via jack, or inverter, or whatever.

I have a 3650, I've pretty much stopped using it (other than as a novelty gadget to show off) because NS freezes up at lot. I've tried a number of configurations and driver combos, but it still freezes up, there's a thread on this. I also demo stuff using the browser and wireless card, but I haven't had the card freeze up.

I've gone back to using Thinkpads (T20, A21, 600x) for both NS and other tools. I've found that they're more reliable.

yeah, a few $$ worth of parts from rat shack and you can build a power booster. but this isn't really that useful except to recharge a little in a pinch. since you'll be in the car you'll want to just use the car charger. if you charge either the sleeve or the ipaq directly, the power will trickle into the other unit...so you can charge both at once.

problem w/ the 38xx is they took away the separate power plug. instead they give you this adapter plug BUT IT BLOCKS THE %$# SERIAL PORT so you can't charge while using serial. finally i modded the 38xx->36xx adapter plug i bought over the internet so i can use my 36xx GPS, and passthru the power and charge the 38xx at the same time.

if you want to just use standard cabling and charge the thing it might be a good idea to get the older sleeve w/ the sep power jack.

One thing to look out for is if you are using a GPS, and you have a keyboard you'll need to disable the keyboard driver before using Mini stumbler. Also I find that by placing the 3870 in it's docking cradle, I can read it just find. You'll need a null modem adapter, and a gender changer to get the GPS working with the cradle.

that's weird. before i got my jornada, i used a 3650 exclusively w/ NS for about a month and didn't have any freeze-ups, except for when i set the GPS to the wrong port. there's a stupid bug in all versions of PPC...if you open the IrDA port like a normal serial port the machine just locks up instantly.

I have a 3870, and God knows it has more than it's fare share of problems, But I have never had it fail or freeze up while running Mini-NetStumbler! And that is probably the only program I can say that about. No... I did think of one other program I've got, a beta, that I also never had any problems with.

I'm using the dual slot PCMCIA sleeve, by the way. But for me the cradle is the way to go. The 3870 sits up, the range is more than I can ask for, and untill NetStumbler supports dual cards in scan mode, I'll be using my iPAQ. Ran all day yesterday without a freeze up.

Yeah, I found that the hard way.

Anyway, I might just have a lemon, it was a hand-me down unit that's been sent back to Compaq 3 times, and it works ok for demos but not much else.

I have a 3670 with PPC 2002 that I use with MiniStumbler and I haven't had any problems with it. I use a Pharos GPS that connects to the iPaq thru the serial port and at the same time gives power to it. I have an Arkon base for the iPaq and the stumbler special. It really beats the use of a laptop.

My dual PC card expansion pack has a power jack.

If you go for a 3800 series (possibly the 3700s as well) the sync port and power jack are one and the same. The 3600s have the two separate however.
