Pocket Streets 2002 Now Has GPS
I think this is a recent development.
There is an update available from Microsoft that adds GPS, latitude/longitude, and real-time tracking to Pocket Streets 2002. It is at: http://www.microsoft.com/pocketstreets/using/download.htm It claims to support any GPS device that has NMEA-****. Intriguing: Can 2 programs be reading the output on Com1 from the GPS simultaneously? That is, Pocket Streets, and Ministumbler... Could we be closer to getting an "affordable" real-time map tracking capability from Ministumbler perchance??? Now, if ONLY I could copy my Pocket Streets 2002 Pushpin file to my desktop PC, and have my Win98SE Pocket Streets 2002 program read the pushpin file. Don't think it will, but I'm gonna try. Anyway, maybe there's a fairly easy way to do all this, and avoid spending another $250 +/- for Mappoints. Sets the mind to thinking... Norm

Pharos GPS
Sorry to keep adding posts and stuff, but I've found something pretty good here:
http://www.pharosgps.com PART # PB003. This is their iGPS-180 receiver with an HP JORNADA 540/560 series cable. It connects to the car's 12VDC lighter, powers the GPS receiver, AND powers the Jornada.. The GPS provides mini-stumbler-copmpatible output: NMEA-0181, RS-232 (8-N-1), 4800 bps output. ALSO: I think this is what the updated Pocket Streets 2002 will accept as well. Best part: It appears to be available for $169. This is the version that does not include any software. You can spend more money and get some software that gives voice directions, but I sure don't need that. What I want (and I hope many others here) is Ministumbler compatibility first, and Pocket Streets 2002 Update compatibility second. We'll see. I'm going to go for it as soon as I can find a retailer. I have the Pharos kit for the iPaq and I can tell you it works great. MiniStumbler works fine with it and if you spend another $46 you can buy the USB laptop adapter cable to use it on your laptop. Since the Pharos is NMEA compatible it woks with pretty much any software. I even got it working in my laptop with linux and Kismet.

Pharos VS PocketStreets
I use the i180 with the Pharos map. It updates every second. The propblem with Pocket Streets 2002 is it updates every 15seconds.
To see my AP pushpins in Pocket Streets 2002 I do the following. 1. import your netstumbler summary with Stumblever and save the map. 2. Open the map with Mappoint 2002. 3. Select the area you want to export. 4. Right-click and select export to pocketpc map. 5. Copy the map and pushpin fine to your CE. 6. Open pocketpc, load the new map, plug your gps in. You will now have pushpins for the APs. Remember in pocket streets the GPS updates evry 15sec..... TiGuy |

Com Ports
I know that MiniStumbler will use Com1 and so does my Pharos GPS. So I can not run the GPS in the two programs at the same time. Any on have a work around for this? I will try to see if there is something in the registry..

In Suimmary...
OK, thanks for the replies, all!
So I guess i'm a little late with my Pocket Streets 2002 news! Now, can I assume that with my Jornada 568: (1) Ministumbler will work fine with the Pharos unit. (2) Pocket Streets 2002 GPS Update WILL Work with the Pharos, but updates only every 15 seconds. (3) Two programs can't access the Com1: Pharos data simultaneously. Am I wrong in any of the 3 assumptions? Norm

Correct......
Yes you are right.... The Jornada 568 works well with Pharos, Pocket Streets, and Netstumbler. The nice thing about the Pharos cable for the jornad is it plugs into the cig lighter, powers the GPS, and recharges the jornada. Bad thing is the pharos will not work without some sort of power, so I am trying to modify my cable to accept an external power source, this way I can walk and stumble....

Pharos & external power
It shouldn't be too difficult to do this. Get an adapter that suits the pharos 12v cigarette lighter connector and put them on a 12V battery pack.
The problem is making it portable.... One issue is power consumption of the iGPS unit (anyone knows?), but the not so good issue is that the IPAQ charges off the same power supply. If I could find a way to turn off IPAQ charging from the 12V, it wouldn't be much of a problem making a battery pack with enough power for the iGPS receiver. Using regular NiMH D-Cells, I think I'd get about 4Ah from a relatively portable package. |

My Setup...
Since I purchsed the PCMCIA sleave with my Jornada it came with anoter battery pack. Well now I have the original Batery which is 3.7v and weights about 1oz. I tapped the +- wires into the Battery cover and wired it to a modified connector on the iGps.
I get about 12hours of battery life for the GPS and to charge it I just put it back on the Jornada and attatch the cable. By the way......The iGps is rated at 3.3 - 5v... |
