Symbol Wireless Networker Support

I know that Ministumbler is new, but what are the chances of support for the Symbol Wireless Networker CF card?

Symbol Wireless

In a short email exchange with Marius yesterday, Marius mentioned that the Symbol Networker is a popular card for professionals and has expressed a desire to add Symbol Networker support.

I ordered a Symbol Wireless Networker last week. It should ship via FedEx for Mon or Tues delivery.

As soon as it arrives, I will jump on my HOG and drive it down to Marius. Like you, I want Symbol Wireless support in the next rev of Netstumbler.

I am running a Jornada 565 with the Networker. I think that this is a cool setup. It beats taking the laptop into the john.

There's a bazillion CF 802.11b cards on the market now. I'd imagine it'd be tough to support them all (though many use the same drivers).

Me personally, I want to see the LinkSys CF card added as it is the best for the money and one of the smallest, best range, and least power consumption..

Either way, thanks. I have been waiting a long time for this...

Same Chipsets?

If most of the different CF cards use the same chipset, (Intersil PRISM II and 2.5) would it be easy to write the drivers?

Support for the Symbol/Socket card is kind of important since AFAIK it's the only card out that supports Type I sockets (as seen on several Pocket PC models.) I have the Socket Communications card (same hardware, slightly older drivers generally) for my Jornada 565.

Symbol Wireless Network Support

Hey All

I had the please of dropping off the Symbol Networker CF Type-I 802.11b card to Marius a couple of hours ago.

He really liked the card, especially the size of it. He immediately popped it into his iPAQ, which he pre-loaded with the Symbol drivers.

He said that he wouldn't start work on the Symbol Network card support right away because he had to get some driver info from Symbol.

I will patiently await the Symbol support in the next version.

DSLBiker.

Right on man. I don't have a symbol card and could really care less if there's support ;-) but at least you did a good thing.

That's rare. But you have my respect. :-)

please look at the Socket Com version

Same hardware, better driver. They're not too different though, I would guess they're based on the same original code only Socket made some good improvements.

Socket is better?

TomKarlo, why do you think Socket is better? As far as I know the hardware is the same, either driver will work on either card. Socket was suppose to be just a tad behind symbol. Some people claim to like the layout better of Socket, but as far as I know the features are the same, just in different places.

Kudos on the symbol card

I am very happy you are working on the symbol card, I will be awating with bated breath. Yes, the drivers need to be current with 2002. Ther old driver I think they pushed out fast to accomadate the market. The newer on is much better. Love the card better range and smaller than most. Should work good with ministumbler.

the layout being better on the Socket card is not a small thing when you're on a pocketPC. Also, in talking to people who have been using it heavily (and comparing side by side) they seem to have a more difficult time logging into networks.

The symbol drivers do not seem to work with the Socket card, not vice versa. I've tested the former myself. Perhaps with a firmware change they would.

Both drivers are really unfortunate in their design, especially the way they handle WEP keys if you connect to several networks. From what I understand MS will be fixing that design in upcoming releases of the OS by moving that info into the OS where it should be (like XP) rather than in the card driver.

COMDEX sucked.

But...

Symbol was there with the CF card. The guy I talked to said he would (try to) get me the SDK for the CF 802.11b card. Hopefully this will sove all the issues on supporting it.

Also, I read somewhere that the Socket card has like NO range compared to the Orinoco card. How does the Symbol compare?

Also, there was a company at Comdex called PEAR who is an antenna company that now has an 802.11b CF card. They say there is no CF card on the market that can match it's range. I'm waiting on tech info from them as well. Hell, I'll try it. I'm working on a free sample...
