Question Warwalking GPS?

Whas the best GPS for warwalking? Before you tell me to use Search, I did. Many times. Can't find a good answer. Have an iPAQ 3870, Dual slot PC card expansion pack, Orinoco Gold PCMCIA, and of course ministumbler.
Work in Manhattan, NYC so I do a LOT of walking around and go into a lot of difft buildings. Read your all experience with the CF and PCMCIA GPS units and how they WONT work with my rig as it wont fit with my Orinoco. So my question is what's a good GPS that I can carry on my person but alo use in car at times or with laptop? The Pharos needs to be powered so that wont work, the Garmins are OK, but need to much cabling and seem a little costly, no?. Is there anything tailored more to the warwalker then the wardriver? Am i making sense? Yeah I could carry around the Garmin with the iPAQ, but I was hoping someone came up with a tested/working more "compact" solution. Any GPS sleeves WITH a PCMCIA slot (for NIC) exist that work with ministumbler??

I think the consensus here is go with Garmin. You can make/buy some custom cables if you want to tame the octopus. One of the biggest problems with GPS solutions for PPC is that if you go with a card one, how are you going to fit your WiFi card in there also?

Hmmm, I wonder...

it certainly would be interesting to see a more compact design. I don't recall seeing anything worth mentioning that us uber-compact.

Ahh well, so much for a clea, "integrated" solution. I guess I'll have to buy a Garmin and a cable. Any consus on which Garmin works best? Legend, Venture, etc? Would have to work decent in buildings if possible.

you should really search the board for garmin gps suggestions... there are plenty threads out there with enough detail to determine which is right for you.

I haven't really experimented with this but Bluetooth uses FHSS so inteference should be minimal.
You have an iPAQ H3870 so the Emtac or Socket Bluetooth GPS should work well for you. You're going to need to do some more research to see how bad the interference is though.
From what I can remember about FHSS, if it detects inteference at a certain frequency, it won't use that frequency for a while.

You are lookin for the best WarWalking Solution? MINE!

http://forums.netstumbler.com/showth...&threadid=6076

I can warwalk up to 20hours wihout recharging the bats.

the dgps receiver does even work partly IN houses and does work great under clothes so you can put him into your bag.

the antenne is robust and "small" and it does detect more effective then any yaggi antenna. yaggi antenne producing wrong results because you cannot be sure if the detected AP is really at your recorded position.

the bat pack for the dgps has enuf power for days
the bat pack for the ipaq has enuf powers for up tp 36 hours

im usin this setup most for walking and its even effective ion small streets where most other setups hae problems

regards

Simon
