Unhappy 100% signal strength, slow speeds...

I'm snagging my fathers connection who lives next door to me, around 25 feet away, direct line of site.....my pci cards antenna is right in the window, my dads AP is right in his window directly across from each other (25-30ft). I finally got 100% link quality and 100% signal strength, but my speeds generally are crap. The pages low slow and all http downloads usually are around 6 to 10 kbps. Irc and Kazaa downloads usually get around 15 to 30 kbps....

Equipment used

My side D-link dwl-520+ pci wireless card

Fathers side D-link dwl-900ap+ access point

Both are airplus and are running at 22mbps (atleast thats what windows and the d-link software said, I set it to that after the 11mbps wasnt going good either)

I even made a Cantanna, but havent messed with it much do to my supposed 100% signal strength reported by the d-link software. Would the cantanna improve my speeds although I'm already at 100% signal strength?

1 more question... My Dlink software says my signal is high, 100%, the windows network thiing says my signal strength is either low or no signal....

Weird.

1) what speeds do you get on yr father's wired network? try a more controlled test like link speed test from dslreports.com.
2) what speeds do you get when you go over to his house?
3) does he get faster speeds on his wireless?

Okay here we go

My dads pc, gets around 300 to 400 kbps (bandwidthplace.com)usually, sometimes slower, depends on time of day. He is sharing his connection with a pc upstairs via wired hub. I bought the AP just for me, no one else is using wireless.

I just tested my speed at dslreports.com

Download is 60 kbps

Upload is 120 kbps

I used the megapath CA test, although im in arkansas.

Im using Win Xp if that helps

Would a registry patch help me via wireless?

Also, since im getting 100 percent signal strength, would a external antenna actually speed up my download/upload?

Thanx for any help

P.s. I downloaded the spyware infested Download Accelerator just for resume purposes and I'm getting around 15 to 25 kbps downloading off a site I usually only get 6 to 8 kbps...Weird..

boy those are weird numbers. upstream faster than downstream? very strange for DSL.

a registry patch wouldn't help. the tweak tester says everything is ok.

i don't think a better antenna will help either, since you are getting 100% signal strength

1) signal strength is 100% but how about link quality. have you tried changing channels? maybe you are getting interference. do you have anything which shows SNR? try ch 1, 6, & 11.
2) can you send a screenshot of XP thing showing low signal?
does it stick at low or fluctuate?

Seriously, good call mshimek!

SkareKr0w, it won't help the speed issue, but you should change that ASAP.

SkareKr0w ,

boy that is really weird stuff you have going on:
1) even w/ cable the upstream is signifcantly slower than the downstream. so i don't know why your testing showed a faster upstream (esp 2x)
2) your "link quality" being 100% pretty much nixes my interference idea, but have you tried the other channels anyway?
if you use the site survey tab, does it show you SNR/S/N values? if so pls post them
3) have you tried WEP on/off comparisons? the dlink that i tried didn't slow down w/ WEP on, but some AP's do, by as much as 30%.

otherwise, i'm stumped. sorry man. anyone else care to jump in?

Yea, I knew I fucked up with the SSID thing, Ill change that asap

Okay, I checked my dads connection this morning on dslreports.com and he is getting

Downstream 162 kbps

Upstream 120 kbps

So the upstream is the same pretty much on my end, but my download is like 100kbps short......weird as hell.

Okay, It doesnt matter what port I have the AP attached to on the hub does it? Its got like 6 ports, numbered 1 to 6, I think mine is on 6. I dont think that matters but im not skilled in that area.

If I change channels on my AP, will it automatically assign that to my wireless NIC?

Ill try changing channels and try turning WEP off, Im pretty sure its on....

Any other ideas? Im stumped, really...

Okay, I went to site survey on my Dlink utility for the wireless Nic and it says that WEP is off, actually it says WEP and under it says no.
