Talking $150 > Ap?

I finaly got my figity phat paycheck today, so now im buying up all the wi-fi i can with it! getting a Orinoco Gold from pcmall.com $69.99 and a Orinoco PCI adapter for my desktop comp. that comes to about 141.51 with 2 day shipping. im excited!

anyway, i need a decent AP for my home and at some point i think im going to make some antenna's depending on what i need Omni- or yagi, etc... (would like to make a sloted omni but it looks hard!) I would like to spend about 150 or less? is this going to be an option or no? It will be on the main floor of the house (not real big) and need to at least be able to get 1 floor each way. cant see this being a problem. anyone have ideas? I can get it off the net but i do have a staples, in town. and a bestbuy withing an hour. thanks.

v2 is on the box not anywhere else on the unit, it specifies the second generation of the unit. The first version has been discontinued, and the latest version, version 2 is the latest version. Just check the box, Fry's was trying to sell the older versions by hiding the newer ver2 behind the older versions.

here is one of the threads that explains the differences
linksys befw11s4 v.2
http://forums.netstumbler.com/showth...light=BEFW11S4

if you want to fly cheap:
http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=22&prid=429
149$USD
http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=...cat=540&scat=0
Linksys 2.4GHz Instant Wireless Access Point (Version 2)

if you look at it this way for around 15 bux more you would be getting a lot more than just a wap. but if you are nonsensically-ubercheap that wouldn't matter...

I am also runnig the BEFW11S4 and really like it.

Web Deal:
buy.com has it with free shipping for $119.95 after $15 mail in rebate.

Another good deal for those cheap people like me out there is the USB Orinoco GOLD adapters. You can use them on a pc or a laptop. Inside the plastic housing is a standard PCMCIA card that you can take out and use without the shell.

It gives the most flexability for people wanting to use it on a desktop and is cheaper that the PCI adapter and PCMCIA card.

Back in January - I bought a Xircom wireless ethernet kit off eBay - about $175 - for an AP & 2 cards - of course that was before I knew about NetStumbler - anyway I'm posting this from my laptop - which has in the IBM wireless card that I bought after I learned about NetStumbler - connecting through my Xircom AP, which just happens to be one floor above me.

It just sits on a bedside table - YES - I have CAT5 to my bedside - don't you? - and I can surf ANYWHERE within 150' of the AP, and that pretty much covers, not only the house but the entire yard.

My guess is - any half decent AP will give you similar results - BTW - the Xircom is a Gemtek OEM

check out http://store.yahoo.com/justdeals/netsol.html

they have a xircom ap for $99, dlink dwl-1000 and bromax for $80

if you have an extra laptop or desktop with a wireless pci adapter, try playing around with cqure or sputnik, they are software ap's based on linux distros. Both work pretty well, when (and it is only a matter of time) my linksys dies I'll use one of these as my ap.

Hey guys, thanks!
HcRUL, that looks REALY easy, whats the point of the pci adapter card then!?

fordem, Thanks for letting me know about the distance, it will be nice to move around anywhere and i wana try this out at a LAN NIGHT too. See how gaming is...

sparafina, i wondered about an ap like that. Thanks! im going to check those out some time when i have nothing to do @ work. I cant seem them needing alot of resources... It would be slick. Oh, have you seen any with bridge capabilities? It would be cool to find a disto like "Coyote Linux" wich is a router that runs off a single floppy. no hd needed anyway. thanks!
