While cruising the postings on ebay I found listings for a cantenna called "cAntenna III". The listing states the cantenna good for 18-20db. This exceeds all the tested designs I've found through a bunch wireless links.
I don't claim to have checked every listing on the web, just a few days worth of surfing. Is this realistic for a cantenna? Most of the tests I've found for cantennas show 10-17db designs. His links show a short range test of around 1300 feet. |

I'd be a little skeptical of that gain...that's starting to creep into parabolic reflector territory...something you're not likely going to get out of any kind of cantenna.
It _could_ be possible if the antenna is precisely constructed and properly tuned, but I have to play the skeptic on this one.

The mention of it does have be a bit curious, I'll admit. My soon-to-be father inlaw is a machinist, so I'm thinking of asking if he can make some parts for me.
I haven't done any directional work just yet...doesn't suit my wardriving style. I do, however, have another wireless project slated for April that will need a directional...and it might be a good time to start tinkering with antennas. ![]()

What I've got on the docket for April is some (c)antenna experimentation and range testing and such. One of the local malls here has an incredibly huge parking lot which I think I can use for range testing if I run it long enough.
There's a section along I-290 in the median that is frequently used by surveyors, presumably to calibrate their equipment...and I've considered using that stretch too...when the weather warms up to do some open-air range testing.

so far without getting into yagi's the best direction stuff i seen are the bi-quads and bi-octs
just to screw around i put a bi-quad 1.25 inches from the back of a folgers can of coffee (the really big one) and man it rox i had to experiment moving it back and forth until tuned right im using it now i got 2 of them on a couple linksys wets running in adhoc mode to eachother to bridge a lan to me from my church so they can get internet
