5db Omni & NS

I just got my 5db Omni in the mail today and have not had a chance to go driving with it yet but I did hook it up to a friends Orinoco card and the AP here in the office did not appear to get any higher signal strength in NS. Do you have to restart NS or remove and replace the card or something when hooking up the antenna or is it just supposed to accept the antenna on the fly?

I plan on going out driving tonight for a while so I will post my results but would like to know in advance if there is anything else I need to do.

Thanks

You should just plug it in and go. I recall reading someone here did the same thing and thought their antenna was defective. Someone else mentioned that the gain cloud formation proved to be too close to the AP to notice a difference... though if you outside and test it without and with the antenna results will show that the signal is stronger with the antenna at further distances...

Please let me know if I am wrong, my memory isn't what it used to be.

Right, take your laptop as far as you can away from the AP without the external antenna. Then plug in the external antenna to check the difference in signal strength. This is the real test.

The area within a few wavelenghts is called the near field.
This area acts as an inductor and absorbs electromagnatizm
instead of radiating it. Which is why antennas dont work well
within a close distance.

I see what you mean ... Thank you all for your help ... I was out last night and had outstanding results.

I typically go out for about 2 hours ... I was out for a total of 2.5 hours but about 1 hour was spent trying to get security information for a friends boss.

In that 1.5 hour that was left I got about twice as many access points as I typically do in a 2 hour period.

I normally get about 20 APs ... Last night I got 45.

Good work to Fab-Corp for distributing this great Mobile-Mark antenna package at a great price.
