Talking About darned-hickity time I bought an AP...

I have two 802.11b cards and have enjoyed them, but today I was thinking to myself that I better start fiddling with my own. So I drove down the Fry's and examined their nice selection for a couple of hours... finally they were telling everyone over the intercom that they were closing and if anyone wanted anything to cattle their way up to the registers... moo... bahh.

I picked up the Linksys BEFW11S4 Ver2 "Instant Broadband" EtherFast Wireless AP + Cable / DSL Router with 4-Port Switch.. and ran to the register. Through my two hours journey at Fry's I pondered over getting the SMC WAP, it had a built in wireless print server, and I am familiar with their products... but after reading the description it didn't appear to have all the features that the linksys did.. and I currently have 3 SMC routers that I do not use the wired print server.. and I wanted to try something new.... I was also tempted to get the 802.11a card and WAP, but after seeing the cards were around 150, and the APs around 400.. I knew I would end up buying the card before I got the AP (especially for DCX)... I almost got the WAP11, but for a few more bucks I could get more features than just an AP... Also I pondered over the Linksys VPN router.. I noticed that out of the 12 they had on the shelf 6 of them had the "This has been thoroughly checked out by a Fried Technician "-BS sticker...(This is one reason I like MicroCenter, at least they mark down returned product and put them in a nice bin).. I think they were returned due to PEBChK so I think next time around I will pick one up, it was pretty cheap for a solid state vpn, and supports 70 simu channels.

Almost at the register I looked down and noticed the pictures looked funny.. then I looked at the model number and noticed it was the older version 1 model.. so I sighed and ran back and noticed that there were a lot of v1's.. so I started to scatter there shelf set up and found a few v2's in the back... the first v2 I grabbed had a "This has been checked out by a ... blah blah" sticker.. so I dug deeper and found 3 new ones.. I picked one and ran back up front...

So here i am... It is still in the box, I haven't slept in a few days.. and things are starting to talk to me... I ran out of Barq's.. the only thing keeping me going is the 11pm showing of STTNG on The NEW TNN.. I think i may be too weak to pull back the plastic wrap and hook it into the current test network.. Anyway i will post any further findings here.. anyone else can do the same

i think the SMC wireless barricade is the same thing as the D-Link DI-713p....seem to remember reading about it somewhere before.
the setup screens look a helluva lot like my SMC wired barricade.
has a lot of nice features but i can't figure out how to turn off the diversity ckt so i can just hook up 1 antenna and dlink tech support sucks. also, even though it has those 2 antennae on the outside the orinoco RG-1100 (which just has a Gold card inside) kicks its ass in terms of range. my friend found the dlink/usr2410 combo completely unuseable in his house...only about 20ft away from the AP (he has an old house...seems to block radio pretty bad). but the orinoco/orinoco combo works all the way to the street. the dlink runs faster w/ WEP on, though.

btw excuse my naivete but what the heck does PEBChk mean?

Problem
Exists
Between
Chair &
Keyboard

It was a code word used to describe a situation covertly to another person in the know about a newbie, in front of the newbie.

usage in context:
... yeah, it sure looks like a PEBChK to me ...

Phonetically pronounced:
PEBB-CHECK

Yes, that is how it usually works... I think we coined the word there while in dialogs with the technicians and it just spread like wildfire. Good to see it is still being used

Also, you can't forget about the "Sounds like an ID-10-T to me."
