About to order my setup...any suggestions?

from fab corp:

Agere / Lucent ORiNOCO Wireless PC Silver Card 77.59 1 77.59
60 inch ORiNOCO/Avaya to N-Male Pigtail 23.00 1 23.00

now for the antenna...
5 dBi Magnetic Mount Omni Antenna 69.95 1 69.95
-or-
9 dBi Omni Directional Antenna 85.00 1 85.00

and from deluo.com..
GPS for PC/Laptop (USB) - $99

i'm very new to stumbling/wardriving...i really like the idea of the smaller antenna and being able to mount it with a magnet and stuff...but how much of a performance increase will i be seeing with the 9dBi larger antenna?

is that the right pigtail adapter?

i'll most likely also be buying a dell lattitude c600 -> p3 750, 256mb, 6gb, 14", etc for $500.

how good to you think this setup will perform for being < $800?

what do you guys think?

I'm just getting started too. Here's my setup so far.

Dell Inspiron 2650 (to be used for school mainly, net stumbling is a bonus)
  • 1.7 gig P4
  • 256 MB Ram
Orinoco Silver-----------------------------
12" Pigtail for Orinoco card-------------
5 dbi MagMount from Fab-corp--------$179.00 total
Garmin eTrex from academy $99

To get items:
  • DC to AC converter for car. 300 watt.
  • Windsheild mount for GPS

I think that's all I can think of.

Well, for laptops that don't have the battery life of mine (Apple PowerBook g4), and when you go on wardrives longer than your battery can handle, you'll need power ... from your car is the best way. Also if you are using other things that need power (some GPSs)

good luck with the new setup!

I wouldn't get a 60" pigtail if I were you...

Yeah, long pigtails are usually a very bad idea, the reason: the cable used in pigtails losses lots of signal, much more than for example the cable used on your antenna. A 12" or even smaller pigtail would be much more appropriate.

ok, here's the new setup:

Agere / Lucent ORiNOCO Wireless PC Silver Card 77.59 1 77.59
19 inch ORiNOCO/Avaya to N-Female Pigtail 22.00 1 22.00
5 dBi Magnetic Mount Omni Antenna 69.95 1 69.95
Total: 169.54

i'm confused, do i need the male or the female pigtail? and the stumbler special applies to this doesn't it?

How hard would it be to make a connector using the two ends of the pigtail with NO cable in between? Just have a converter and maybe make it connect to the Orinoco card directly and stick somehow. THAT would be cool.

You want the O/A to N-MALE connector if your connecting it to the omni. Make sure to put "please apply the STUMBLER specials" in the "other comments" box when you order.

Talking

My Silver card (branded as Enterasys RoamAbout DS11)

links directly to my antenna (no pigtail) - but this antenna is not a mag mount and it's only 5dbi and sits in my back window (less obvious) .. you could glue a magnet on

$69

http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/...sp?dpno=839847

Get a good card in the first place.

On your previous question about power, inverters are cool, bit bulky though ... http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=122782
