Question access/repeater similar

i have similar delima. i am trying to get the local free-net transmitted 1 block away into my apartment. then possibly boosted or cabled directly to my main pc.

equip= laptop running nt w/orinocco silver(card on order)
new, large, fast pc w/ xp w/ nic card/no wifi capabilities
15db directional antenna on order
couple of old 486 machines

the signal is out the front door, the main pc is in back of apt., approx 40' from where the ant. is to be mounted. i know i cant run that much ant.cable. but what about placing the laptop close to the ant., connect ant.to orinocco card, and then cable the pc to the laptop and access the net? do i need a router to connect these machines? do they need to be on same OS? is there an easier way to do this?

and yes i have done several searches and read what i could find. thus the post here

Apparently you missed the part about how rude it is to crosspost on these forums.

Delete one of these posts. If you want your own thread, keep this one. If you want to hijack that other thread, delete this one.

Re: access/repeater similar

No problem. On to what you want to do:

None of this has to be on the same OS. Quite a few people have mixed OS environments. First, make sure that the main PC can't get the signal. It just might surprise you.

If it can't, then instead of trying to "roll your own" using the laptop or 486 (which can be done, but it can be a PITA) why not get a cheap wireless router? Linksys BEFW11S4 will do the trick (150USD). Cat5 from that to the PC.

BTW, welcome aboard.

Thanks. I didnt realize a wireless router would work in the opposite direction. It would intake a random wifi signal and output it via the cat 5 jack?

what about a device to use my silver wifi card in my pc, are there usb pcmcia port replicators?

While I'm not sure what you mean by "random wifi signal," putting a router on as a client to the network should work. Most free-nets have tech savvy types who will talk you through an install. I'd contact them to see what they recommend.

The output on the Cat5 would be a standard Ethernet. You would have a wired LAN on the house side.

As far as USB/PCMCIA replicators, many wireless USB devices are exactly that type of device. The ORiNOCO is a good example. Crack it open and inside is a standard ORiNOCO card in a converter.

Do a search on "PCMCIA" on this board and I believe you'll get some hits. People have discussed these before, including what brands will work with which cards.. Other options for the PC also include PCI or ISA to PCMCIA adapters. The secret there seems to be the Ricoh chipset. Search on "Ricoh" for details.
