[advice needed] Which (Senao) Card is best??
I want to buy a wireless LAN setup for my Laptop. I browsed a little in the card comparison List linked in the FAQ, i decided to buy the senao 200mw card with connector for an external Antenna.
Then i saw that there are a lot more senao cards avilable now. I was amazed from the a-b-g combo, would like to buy it, but have seen that it has some db less recive sensitivity. And it has also no possibility for conecting an external Antenna. Has anybody experience with this card, do i have really less receveing strength and get less APs? Or is the higher speed of the card an advantage that makes it better anyway? Are there other cards with abg compatible with the possibility to connect external antennas and good receive and send strenght?? If long distance range is my main interest do i need a or g compatibility? Is there a "best" card at the moment thank you, kind regards Konze |

Best Card: Lucent/Orinoco/Proxim Gold Card (802.11b)
Just about all the wireless toolz are made to use this card. It even has an Ext. Connector. The Senao cards are great for building wireless networks. The 802.11b cards are even rumored to work with NS in NDIS 5.1 mode. As for using combo cards in the wireless toolz, you are SOL not many (if ANY) will support them. I'd stay away from them if I was you. (For Sniffing/Stumbling sake) But, if you are going to use the combo card in a normal network setup, then they are OK.. You can never go wrong with a Lucent Gold Card..... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me sail, Let me sail, with an Orinoco Gold.... Well, I've been anti- .11a/.11g for a while now.. but as for the difference between .11b cards, I'd say pay the extra for the model with two external connectors. It could be as much as twice the cost, be is also fully functional without ANY antennas connected to it.. so you have options
Madhadder is correct about them functioning in Netstumbler, with different oddities/fixes for depending on which OS you use. ... but unless you have a specific reason for that card, getting a cheaper lucent based card (as Madhadder suggested), would be much more cost efficient

My advice, if you're planning on doing any actual driving, get a card with an external antenna port. I have the Netgear 401, and I'm completely trapped since I can't add an antenna. Also have an Orinoco with a port, and it's like the sky's the limit.

Thanks for the information, I want to do (learn) Sniffing/Stumbling, so focus on 801.11b cards seems the best solution. The main target for my new internet conection is an AP about a kilometer from my place with buildings between. So I look for cards with high recive sensitivity and high transmit power. In thisrecive sensitivity list i favour one of the two topmostcards:
Senao and Demarc unfortunately the are both prism based and expensive. Im using windows xp so I think they work with netstumbler. What i´m worried about with the Lucent Card is the just 30mW Power. Do important tools not work with prism cards? Isnt NS the only important tool? Is NDIS 5.1 a mode of operation that is restricted compared with a mode for Lucent based cards? Where can I get cards cheap? bye, Konze |

the 200mW card alone will not get you the distance you are looking for. you will need an external antenna...

I would like to have a about 5 dbAntenna. But i would like to just order one time for my setup, is there a shop with one of this cards and antennas that work well to a fair price? The 140€ from the demarc card seem rather high to me althoug the detachable antenna looks very handy..
Good bye Konze |

Most of the place I've seen don't carry the Senao cards. They
can only be found at certain places. As for Antt. and cabels etc. try either the NS store or www.fab-corp.com |

That would depend on: 1. Total Order Value 2. Your Country Of Residence / Shipping Address For Germany usually if it's under Eur. 30 so won't bother with it, but sometime they do. It's a 50/50 type thing. I've had a 30 Eur computer part get hit for "Zoll" but Eur 900 in DVD's not... Go Figure... ![]() |

Kinda correct. It's more like if the Company you buy from is in the EU, then their usually won't be any tax. However if your parts come from Switzerland/Litchenstein/corsica you will be paing tax, as they are not part of the EU. |

If i calculated correctly the card is at hihip 110€, for that price i can buy it somwhere else and pay some taxes too, I would like for a place to buy a suitable antenna too, i thing of a 5db magnet-mount and a small antenna for direct connection to tht laptop.
At the moment I think i will buy the 200mw SMC Card at ecost.com , its 55€ there, not as good as the senao, but nearly half the price. Ciao Konze |
