Alternative to PCMCIA WiFi notebook cards?
Hello I am currently using a *Senao WiFi PCMCIA long range card* to access the net via a WiFi outdoor public hotspot. I am about 60 feet away from the central core of the outdoor hotspot...but due to me being near an x-ray machine and a magnotometer, the signal strength isn't the greatest. The signal strength has decreased in the last couple weeks from around 80% to 40%. This got me wondering. Could I use a WiFi ethernet bridge as a feasible alternative to a pcmcia wifi notebook card? If so, how much stronger would the signal be?
Let's say I use *This one* from D-Link. Would this work and allow me to connect to the hot spot? What is the best WiFi Ethernet Bridge for doing this? Is it worth it? Thanks in advance ![]() |

Yeah it would probably work, but $100 is expensive. You have to ask yourself "is it worth it?", I don't know how much cash you have. You can buy a Linksys WET11 for cheaper.
The most important question, however, is why you are trying to do this? There's a coffee shop wifi service with a hospital in the way? You sure you're not breaking the Ts and Cs of the wifi service you're connecting to? Could all be innocent, I know, but some clarification would go down well.

Thanks for the reply. Without revealing where I work , lets just say I am stationed and work near security/scanning equipment, not a hospital. And no, I'm not breaking any Ts and Cs of the WiFi service. It's outside, completely free and is paid for by the city.
LOL since when is $100 expensive? ![]() |

And I can assure you that the city, and any other free hotspot provider, most certainly don't intend that people should use the hotspot from outside the premises where they installed the setup. I.E. if the local park has a wifi hotspot zone, it's intended to be used while in the park, not while you are at work in a nearby commercial business. So IMNSHO you are just another freeloading idiot, trying to leach on services not intended to be used in the manner you are planning. Dutch

Ok, so they granted you permission to connect with a card, but adding a bridge into the mix could have unforseen issues with their network. You should ask the administrators of the network if you can add a bridge to their network.
I have seen the additions of bridges (especially cheap pieces of junk like you quoted in your OP) flood wireless networks with garbage. Thus making it useless to everyone. You should ask the admin of the network what they would recommend to improve your situation. If they know there's a deadspot they might do something to resolve it.

As for that information, you should have posted that previously, instead of trying to be secretive about it. Reason for mentioning Irvine, is due to the fact you are connecting on an PacBell ADSL line originating in Irvine. We go by the facts here. None of us are clairvoyant, so if you don't post the proper information, we go by what the logs say. We see retards trying to do some social engineering every day, several times a day, and your posts in this thread so far, fits the profile all to well. Go forth and read ESR's essay on "How to ask questions the smart way". Link to that essay can be found in the Welcome Desk section. While searching out that link, you better read ALL the posts in the Welcome Desk section, before you post anything else on this forum. As for being a Federal Employee : If you, as you claim, have full permission to utilize the network from the manager, then ask him to get the IT technicians to provide the necessary equipment so you can utilize the network from your location. That's what the IT technicians are there for. If your employeer had deemed it necessary for you to have net access for whatever task you have hired to do, they would have provided you with the means to connect to the net. So far your posts haven't indicated that in any way. That means you are trying to goof of while on the job being payed by your fellow taxpayers money. That just confirms my opinion of you as an idiot. Dutch
