Another long distance wi-fi problem......

Hoped some one could throw some light on this problem, I have been setting up a 1km wireless connection to share adsl with a relative, I'm using 2 Buffalo AirStation 54 Mbps* Compact Repeater Bridge (WLA-G54C) + 2 16db yagi type antenna with 3m's of LMR400 coax + 0.5m lucent pigtail at one end and just a pigtail at the other, I have clos chimney to chimney been using NS to get a signal on my laptop with Dell Truemobile 1150 but can't get any signal from my own a/p but when I was searching I picked up a signal from a neighbours a/p three doors away from the a/p I was trying to find, I was really p****d off as it turned out it was a adsl modem router with the standard antenna fitted with an SSID "NETGEAR" and it gave a signal of -80dB over the 1km distance.
First of all is there a way of finding out what model Netgear is being used (without knocking on the door) maybe from the MAC address cuz I could be buying one in the near future.
Secondly how is it I can pick this a/p up but can't get s**t from my own.

Here are the specs from Buffalo for the WLA-G54C don't know the specs from the Netgear not much info on there site about output etc.

Summary of the AirStation WLA-G54C features:
Wi-Fi™ (Wireless Fidelity) certifi ed AirStation will communicate with other Wi-Fi compliant 802.11g wireless LAN products.
Supports Wi-Fi Protected Access™ (WPA), AES, 802.1x/EAP, and WEP for security
Automatic Transmit Rate Select mechanism transmits at speeds of 24, 12, 11, 5.5, 2 and 1Mbps.
Supports turbo mode of 36, 48 and up to 54 Mbps*.
Wireless Distribution System (WDS) support for multi-point communication.
Ability to set a fi xed data rate for faster than 11Mbps ignoring 802.11b legacy devices.
Nominal Output Power 15 dBm (32mW) Receiver Sensitivity -92 dBm.

Have you computed the Fresnel Zone? I'm betting that this is the problem. At 1km, you have to have a clearence on the order of 6m-7m. If you're going chimney to chimney, there's no way that you have the needed RFLOS.

Looking at the specs, your Link Budget is probably OK, but have you computed it?

It the antenna oriented correctly, and it is pointing in the same general direction? Sometimes for setting up a PtP, it is better to use an omni at one end until aiming is complete at the opposite side. Also a friend with a walkie-talkie or a cell phone can make this much easier.

As to picking up the neighbor's it may just be in the right spot. Sometimes it just happens. How do you know it is 'a adsl modem router with the standard antenna fitted with an SSID "NETGEAR" ', yet you don't know the model?

Hi
I did my calculations here _http://www.swisswireless.org/wlan_calc_en.html I don't think the Fresnel Zone is the problem as I have clos over open fields looking over the top of the first a/p the only obstruction is a bungalow 30m away but the antenna is on a two storey house, I have looked along the barrell to line it up, as for the SSID "NETGEAR" open WEP this is the info I get from NS couldn't find any other computers but there was a internet connection no one at home, no external antenna the rest is assumption, wondered if maybe the WLA-G54C's just aren't up to the job.

Enjoy your vacation. Use the time constructively. Here's a suggestion: Learn syntax and how to type.

You're lucky.. They are talking about a sextax here. How can I explain to the wife we ain't gonna afford both food, and sleeping together more than once a year...

Food, sex, food, sex.. What is most important ? Decisions, decisions.. Ahh well, a good piece of sirloin steak, have been known to lure me away from a hot date before. I'll go for the food.

That's no brainer: Give up buying food! Just hit on you're friends and relatives for dinner. THEY can go without sex.
