antenna rig idea of sorts

i recently procured a mini dish antenna designed for DISH TV from a friend and although its feedhorn is for the DISH TV freqs... from talking some Ham'ers I know they said all I would need is to rig up an antenna element in front of the dish to catch the signals.

What I would like to try is rig up a small Cantenna (see the summer edition of 2600 magazine) using a coffee can and aim it BACK at the dish.. like a refracting telescope.

Has anyone done this sort of thing to see if it will offer some advantage to a plain ole cantenna?

I bet you don't call them "Ham'ers" to their face... Most Hams I know would consider that insulting or at least in poor taste; too much like "CB'er" which is definately fighting words.

It's been done a lot. STW for "Primestar". There are several sites devosted to this type of design, and most are based on the Primestar dish. This is probably due to the availablity of that brand.
